- Won a school-record 15 games en route to a 15-1 mark
- Won 13 games in a row on the way to the national title
- Big Sky Conference champions with a perfect 7-0 league record
- Senior running back Yohance Humphery rushed for a school-record 1,658 yards (as of 2012), and he rushed for 142 yards in the championship game. (Playoff state were not included in official player state until 2003)
- Senior safety Vince Huntsberger had a team-high 113 regular-season tackles, and holds the (as of 2012) school record with 393 career tackles
- The 2001 team had nine players named first team all-league: Calvin Coleman, CB; John Fitzgerald, FB; Spencer Frederick, TE; Yohance Humphery, RB; Vince Huntsberger, SS; Etu Molden, WR; Chris Snyder, K; Matt Steinau, LB; Thatcher Szalay, OG
- In 2001 the Grizzlies recorded their 16th consecutive winning season
- The team was ranked first in the nation by The Sports Network in the ninth week of season, and finished at No. 1
- Montana’s 12 seniors had the theme “Unfinished Business” that season and adopted the phrase “Say Who?”
- The team 38-27 win over the Bobcats was the 16th straight for the Griz over MSU, and their 20th league win in a row
- Registered a dominating 13-6 win over Furman in the Division I-AA championship game
- Montana was just one play away from the first shutout in a I-AA championship game in its victory over Furman
