Hollie Tyler scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Corrie Villegas came off the bench to tally 13 points and help lead the University of Montana to a 73-66 exhibition victory over D??j?? Vu Sunday afternoon at Dahlberg Arena.
"This was a good basketball game for us to play in terms of who we were playing," UM head coach Robin Selvig said. "D??j?? Vu is a difficult team to defend. They have a couple of players who can shoot from the outside, and they have two or three players who can post up. Then you throw in Stacey (Dales-Schuman) and Vanessa (Nygaard)."
D??j?? Vu, a team comprised of former Lady Griz players as well as WNBA stars Dales-Schuman and Nygaard, gave Montana all it could handle late in the game. After UM led 45-35 at halftime, D??j?? Vu slowly chipped away at the deficit, eventually tying the game at 61-61 with six minutes left in the game.
That's when Tyler and Villegas took over. Tyler converted two layups sandwiched between a jumper by Villegas to give Montana 67-61 advantage with 4:05 to play. Tyler would later add another basket and a free throw to give the Lady Griz a 70-62 lead with 3:07 remaining.
It appeared in the first half that Montana would have little trouble with the Lady Griz alums. Montana shot 46 percent from the floor in the first half, including 6-for-10 shooting from 3-point range. Four of those treys came in four successive trips down the court. Trailing 17-16, Katie Edwards drained two 3-pointers, followed by treys from LeAnn Montes and Crystal Baird, to put the Lady Griz up 28-17 with 10:54 left in the half.
Villegas was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field in the opening half with two 3-pointers. Tyler, meanwhile, did her damage after the break, tallying 13 of her 20 points in the second half.
"This was a good test for us," Selvig said. "I told the ladies before the game that I thought this was a game I thought we should win. I told them we would have to play harder than them and beat them on the boards."
Montana did control the boards, outrebounding D??j?? Vu 46-35. Montana also had 20 offensive rebounds.
Marti Leibenguth led three D??j?? Vu players in double figures with 14 points. Skyla Sisco added 11 points, while Jeanne McNulty King scored 10 points off the bench. Dales-Schuman and Nygaard combined for only eight points on 2-for-17 shooting.
Montana opens the regular season a week from Sunday, Nov. 24, when the Lady Griz entertain the University of Portland. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Dahlberg Arena.
