... If you think Washington-Grizzly Stadium's north end zone is rowdy now, just wait until September. The state Board of Regents unanimously approved a proposal Thursday to add 4,004 seats to the north end zone of the University of Montana's football stadium, bringing capacity to 23,009. The cost is expected to run between $2 million and $2.5 million. The proposal also calls for additional restrooms and concession stands.

... NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana loses one of his four Super Bowl rings and Monte, the University of Montana mascot, helps the legendary quarterback find it. That's the plot of the latest ESPN "This is SportsCenter" commercial, scheduled to debut at halftime of the Super Bowl on ABC on Sunday, Jan. 26. ... In a game punctuated with great plays, Steve Horne had the exclamation point. Horne banked in the game-winning shot at the buzzer to give Montana a 90-88 win over Idaho State in an exciting, end-to-end Big Sky Conference men's basketball game Thursday night in front of 2,756 fans at Reed Gym. The University of Montana made a single-game school-record 12 3-pointers, eight in the first half, as the Lady Griz opened Big Sky Conference play with a 79-47 victory over Idaho State Thursday night before 3,181 fans at Dahlberg Arena. Montana (10-4, 1-0 Big Sky) played its best game of the season, thanks in part to its best first half of the season. ... Rick Lubke of Hamilton was the winner of the January "Trip of the Month" drawing, sponsored by the Grizzly Athletic Association. He won a trip for two to the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando. The February drawing is for a trip for two to Kauai, Hawaii.
Other winners in this year's program include Dave Evans of Missoula (Las Vegas), Mike McNamara of Missoula (Mexican Riviera), Wade Hoyt of Missoula (New York City), Mark Comfort of Missoula (Victoria, British Columbia), Doug Klein of Missoula (Puerto Vallarta), Harry Brown of Whitefish (Seattle Seahawks football game) and Mikki Rydell of Great Falls (Ireland). Work is continuing on the UM Athletics "Hall of Champions" project, which will include the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame, as well as trophies, retired jerseys and other related materials to help preserve the history and promote the successes of UM Athletics. The hall is located in the south concourse of the Adams Center on the UM campus. Intercollegiate Athletics, in conjunction with the National Advisory Board for Grizzly Athletics, is raising approximately $350,000 to complete the project, which also consists of a donor wall for Grizzly Athletics. This wall will contain the names of those individuals who have made endowment gifts or major donations to the athletic department over the years totaling $5,000 or more. Categories have been established for the various giving levels to athletics ($5,000-$9,999; $10,000-$24,999; $25,000-$49,999; $50,000-$99,999; $100,000-$499,999; $500,000-$999,999; and $1 million and more). ... UM athletic teams wouldn't be as successful without the private financial support they receive from Griz fans across the country. One avenue of this private support is the specialty clubs that provide additional funding for such things as recruiting, etc. In addition to making a huge difference in each of these programs, members of these specialty clubs are "more in the know" about what's happening in the respective sports offered at UM Athletics.
