... Monte, the National Mascot of the Year from The University of Montana, will be honored by the Montana State Legislature and Gov. Judy Martz next Wednesday, Feb. 19. The mascot's first scheduled appearance in the Capital Building will be at 12:30 p.m.

On Friday, Feb. 21, the Lady Griz will host the Cats in a 7:05 p.m. game in Dahlberg Arena at UM's Adams Center. The next night, the Griz-Cat men's basketball teams square off in another 7:05 p.m. contest in Missoula. ... The University of Montana Lady Griz basketball team (14-6, 5-2 Big Sky) opens the second half of Big Sky Conference play on the road this week with a pair of critical games. On Thursday, Montana will be in Ogden, Utah, to take on Weber State (14-6, 6-1 Big Sky), which is in second place in the Big Sky. Tip off is slated for 7:05 p.m. at the Dee Events Center. Then on Saturday, the Lady Griz head to Pocatello, Idaho, to square off against Idaho State (5-14, 1-6 Big Sky). Tip off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. in Reed Gymnasium.
Radio coverage will be provided by the Lady Griz flagship station, KLCY Radio in Missoula (930 AM), with Tom Stage providing play-by-play.

... The University of Montana Grizzlies (10-14 overall, 4-5 Big Sky) return home for a pair of Big Sky Conference games, hosting the Weber State Wildcats (18-5, 8-0) on Thursday, February 13, and the Idaho State Bengals (11-10, 4-4) on Saturday, February 15.

Field events begin at 5:30 p.m. with the men's and women's weight throws. The events conclude with the men's and women's shot puts. ... The University of Montana football team dished out its annual awards to the 2002 squad on Saturday. QB John Edwards won the Terry Dillon Award for most outstanding offensive player while DB Trey Young won the Steve Carlson Award for outstanding defensive player. Following are the awards that were announced:
--- Trey Young of San Diego, Calif.: 2002 Steve Carlson Award, also named to virtually every Division I team and was given defensive MVP honors for the Big Sky Conference. Young was also a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award (I-AA defensive player of the year).
--- John Edwards of Billings: Winner of the Terry Dillon Award (outstanding offensive player) and was also voted co-MVP on offense with a record of 27-4 as a Griz starter. Edwards was also a finalist for the Walter Payton Award (I-AA offensive player of the year).
--- Dylan McFarland of Kalispell: The junior tackle received the Paul Weskamp Award (outstanding offensive lineman). McFarland was also given first-team all-conference honors.
--- Tim Bush of Kellogg, Idaho: Voted recipient of the Larry Miller Award (outstanding defensive lineman). Bush was also a first-team all conference pick.
--- Herb Fernandez of San Diego, Calif.: The defensive end was honored with the Pat Norwood Award for being the most inspirational Griz player.
--- Dave DeCoite of Truckee, Calif.: The junior safety received the Golden Helmet Award, which is awarded to the team's hardest hitter. DeCoite was also a second-team All-Big Sky pick.
--- Brandon Neill of Great Falls: The senior quarterback received the Tony Barbour Award (player who best represents Griz football).
--- Joel Robinson of Kalispell: Received Montana's "Outstanding Linebacker" award and was an honorable mention all-conference selection.
--- Brent Meyers of Missoula: Received the "Special Team's Player of the Year" award.
--- Jon Talmage of Anaheim Hills, Calif.: The freshman receiver was selected "Newcomer of the Year" after pacing the Griz as the team's second-leading receiver with 50 catches, despite missing three games due to injury.
--- Dustin Dlouhy of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Jeff Disney of Glendora, Calif.: Voted Montana's "Scout Team Players of the Year."
... ATTENTION PHOENIX AREA GRIZ FANS OR THOSE HEADED TO PHOENIX FOR VACATION AND/OR SPRING BREAK 2003. Two golfing fund-raisers for UM Athletics are currently scheduled in the Phoenix (Arizona) area in March.
The first will take place on Sunday, March 23rd, sponsored by Al McCarthy and Duke's Sports and Grill. The two-person scramble will begin at noon at the Silverado Golf Course in Scottsdale. Cost is $100 per person. Following the golf outing at 6 p.m., there will be a function at Duke's Sports and Grill in Scottsdale. The next day, Monday, March 24th, the 2nd annual Griz 4-Person Scramble will take place at the Tatum Creek Ranch at Cave Creek, north of Scottsdale. The scramble will start at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $110 per person, with proceeds going to UM Athletics. Following the golf, there will be hors d'oeurves, as well as a program featuring UM Athletic Director Wayne Hogan and new Griz football coach Bobby Hauck. ... The University of Montana is planning an expansion of Washington Grizzly Stadium for the 2003 season. You can reserve the right to purchase $148 North End Zone season tickets today! All you need is a fully refundable $75* per seat deposit to reserve your seat.
Earlier this month, the state Board of Regents unanimously approved a proposal to add 4,004 seats to the north end zone of the University of Montana's football stadium, bringing capacity to 23,009. The cost is expected to run between $2 million and $2.5 million. The proposal also calls for additional restrooms and concession stands. Construction is expected to begin in April.

Also, it has been decided that a new stadium suites expansion project will be delayed until next year - and will not be a part of the seating project taking place this spring. ... Rick Lubke of Hamilton was the winner of the January "Trip of the Month" drawing, sponsored by the Grizzly Athletic Association. He won a trip for two to the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando. The February drawing is for a trip for two to Kauai, Hawaii.
Other winners in this year's program include Dave Evans of Missoula (Las Vegas), Mike McNamara of Missoula (Mexican Riviera), Wade Hoyt of Missoula (New York City), Mark Comfort of Missoula (Victoria, British Columbia), Doug Klein of Missoula (Puerto Vallarta), Harry Brown of Whitefish (Seattle Seahawks football game) and Mikki Rydell of Great Falls (Ireland). Work is continuing on the UM Athletics "Hall of Champions" project, which will include the Grizzly Sports Hall of Fame, as well as trophies, retired jerseys and other related materials to help preserve the history and promote the successes of UM Athletics. The hall is located in the south concourse of the Adams Center on the UM campus. Intercollegiate Athletics, in conjunction with the National Advisory Board for Grizzly Athletics, is raising approximately $350,000 to complete the project, which also consists of a donor wall for Grizzly Athletics. This wall will contain the names of those individuals who have made endowment gifts or major donations to the athletic department over the years totaling $5,000 or more. Categories have been established for the various giving levels to athletics ($5,000-$9,999; $10,000-$24,999; $25,000-$49,999; $50,000-$99,999; $100,000-$499,999; $500,000-$999,999; and $1 million and more). ... UM athletic teams wouldn't be as successful without the private financial support they receive from Griz fans across the country. One avenue of this private support is the specialty clubs that provide additional funding for such things as recruiting, etc. In addition to making a huge difference in each of these programs, members of these specialty clubs are "more in the know" about what's happening in the respective sports offered at UM Athletics.
