Sophomore Claudia Houle matched a season high with 26 kills for the Montana volleyball team on Friday night, but it was not enough as Portland State rallied from a one-game deficit to defeat the Griz in four games, 21-30, 30-27, 30-22, 30-28. Montana dropped its fourth straight match to fall to 3-13 overall, 0-6 in Big Sky Conference play. The Vikings improved to 10-8, 3-3 in league play.
The Griz dropped their 25th consecutive conference road match despite playing one of their better matches of the season. UM out-hit Portland State for the match, .279 to .276, and again played well at the net, holding a 13.0-8.0 advantage in total team blocks.
The .279 hitting percentage was Montana's second-best effort of the season, and the 13.0 blocks matched its second-highest total of the season.
The Griz came out strong, winning the first game, 30-21, behind seven of Houle's match-high 26 kills. Montana hit .341 for the game while limiting PSU to .125 hitting.
In the second game it was the Vikings who got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 9-3 advantage. Portland State led, 28-20, late in the game and held on for a 30-27 win after the Griz mounted a late charge.
Game three was tight early, with PSU holding a slight one-point lead, 11-10, but the Vikings went on an 11-4 run to take control of the game, eventually winning 30-22. Both teams hit well in the game, with Portland State hitting an impressive .500 to Montana's .433.
Both teams hit under .200 in the deciding game four that would go down to the wire. The Griz took the lead late in the match, 25-24, on a junior Diana Thompson service ace, but a Montana service error and three quick kills by the Vikings put PSU up 28-26.
A Portland State attack error and a service ace from freshman Jackie White tied the match at 28-28, but the Vikings finished the game and the match with a kill and a service ace to win 30-28.
In addition to Houle's 26 kills, which came on .365 hitting, junior Audrey Jensen added 12 kills and freshman Micaela Parker had 11. Sophomore EvaLyn Whitehead had nine kills and hit a team-high .471, finishing with one error in 17 attacks.
Thompson had her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with a match-high 58 assists and 13 digs. White led Montana with 14 digs.
