Brown, Brosh pace Griz runners at NCAA Pre-Nationals

Sophomore Cee Jay Brown and freshman Allie Brosh led the Montana cross country teams at Saturday's NCAA Pre-National meet at Terre Haute, Ind. Brown ran the men's 8,000-meter course in 25:27.5 to finish 122nd overall in the men's Blue Race, leading the Grizzlies to a 33rd-place finish. Brosh ran the 6,000-meter women's race in 22:17.6 to finish 114th overall in the women's Blue Race, helping UM to 36th place.
Colorado easily won the men's race, placing four of its top five runners in the top 12 to finish with 63 points. Cal Poly was well back in second place with 165 points.
New Mexico's Matt Gonzales won the men's race with a time of 23:47.2. He finished less than a second ahead of CU's Brent Vaughn (23:48.1).
Rounding out Montana's top five finishers were sophomore Matt Winter (127th, 25:29.8), sophomore Richie Pemberton (187th, 26:07.0), freshman Dan Bingham (195th, 26:18.7) and sophomore Fritz Friesz (226th, 26:59.1).
Stanford won the women's race, totaling 49 points. The Cardinal had four of its top five runners finish in the top 12 overall.
Stanford's Alicia Craig won the individual race in a time of 20:20.4, beating North Carolina's Carol Henry by over three seconds (20:23.6).
Rounding out the Griz's top five finishers were sophomore Dominique Colberg (178th, 22:56.7), junior Celia Maclean (184th, 22:58.1), junior Shannon Johnson (198th, 23:09.2) and freshman Julie Schwengler (204th, 23:14.8).
Montana's next race is Saturday, Oct. 30, when the Grizzlies compete at the Big Sky Conference championship at Bozeman, Mont.
