Bobcats shut down Griz, slow UM's momentum

Montana State put an end to the Montana volleyball team's recent successful play with a 3-0 victory in front of 4,159 fans in Bozeman, Mont., on Friday night. The Bobcats swept the season series, winning the second match of the season against the Grizzlies, 30-24, 30-25, 30-18.
Montana dropped to 6-16 overall, 3-9 in league play. MSU improved to 16-7, 8-4 in conference play.
The Grizzlies entered Friday's match a winner in three of its previous four matches, winning with the combination of a good hitting percentage with solid play at the net. MSU limited Montana to .054 hitting in Friday's match, UM's lowest percentage of the year, and allowed the Grizzlies just 4.0 total team blocks, their second-lowest total of the year.
The Bobcats' plan to hold down Montana's top hitter, sophomore Claudia Houle, proved to be successful. The 5-10 outside hitter had just six kills and hit -.073, both season lows.
The Grizzlies had one player reach double figures in kills, freshman Micaela Parker, who totaled 13. Houle and junior Audrey Jensen both had six kills, while senior Alice Myers added five.
Junior Diana Thompson had 25 assists for Montana, and freshman libero Jackie White continued her stellar defensive play, finishing with a match-high 25 digs, a season best.
Myers led UM with three blocks. Freshman Jessica Petersen and Jensen had two each.
Montana State hit .189 in the match. Megan Zanto had 15 kills and hit .367 to lead MSU, with Kim Stonehouse adding 12 kills.
Bobcats setter Kamber Kelly had a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs.
Montana remains in seventh place in the Big Sky, a half game behind Northern Arizona (3-8), which plays at league-leading Eastern Washington on Saturday.
The Grizzlies close out their conference season next weekend with home matches against Eastern Washington and Portland State. Friday's match with the Eagles will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the West Auxiliary Gym. The UM-PSU match will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
