First day results from Montana Open

Brad Benjamin of Montana State and former Montana stand-out Suzanne Krings lead the decathlon and heptathlon respectively after the first day of the Montana Open, held at Dornblaser Field in Missoula, Mont., under cloudy skies.
Benjamin won the high jump and placed in the top three in several other events on his way to scoring 3,382 points through five events in the 10-event decathlon. MSU teammate Steven Hodge was second with 3,339 points while Troy McDonough, who is running un-attached, is third with 3,291 points after the first day. No men from Montana entered the decathlon.
Krings, who starred for Montana last year in the heptathlon, scored 3,153 points as she won the 100-meters, high jump and shot put while finishing second in the 200-meters. She leads Carla Breuer of Montana by more than 300 points with three events left on Saturday. Breuer scored 2,842 points on Friday, finishing second to Krings in the shot put and high jump. Shawna Kern of the University of Mary is in third 2,553 while Bailey Cox of the University of Montana is fourth with 2,509.
Both the decathlon and heptathlon conclude tomorrow morning at Dornblaser Field starting with the decathlon at 9:15 a.m. while the rest of the Montana Open gets underway at 11:45 a.m.
