6/7/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Outdoor Track, Women's Track and Field
University of Montana senior Scott McGowan and junior Dane Brubaker will compete at the 2004 NCAA Division I Track and Field Outdoor National Championships at Austin, Texas, beginning on Thursday. Both UM student-athletes advanced to the national meet after top-five showings at the NCAA Midwest Regional at the end of May.
McGowan, who finished second in the 1,500 meters at regionals by three one-thousandths of a second, will race in the 1,500 meter preliminaries on Thursday evening at 7:15 p.m. Mountain time. McGowan's seed time of 3:41.87, which he ran at the Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) Relays on April 17, ranks the Poplar, Mont., native 12th out of 26 competitors.
Donald Sage, a junior from Stanford, has posted the nation's best time in the 1,500 meters this year, 3:40.31.
McGowan was an All-American in the 1,500 meters at the 2002 national outdoor meet, finishing 10th with a time of 3:45.40 at Baton Rouge, La.
Brubaker, who finished fourth in the javelin at the Midwest Regional, will open with qualifying throws on Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. Mountain time. The Terry, Mont., native had a season-best throw of 220-09 at regionals, which seeds him 24th out of 26 competitors at the national meet.
The top-ranked thrower in the javelin is Leigh Smith, a senior from Tennessee, whose top effort in 2004 is 257-10.
Brubaker will be competing at the national championships for the second straight year. Last year he finished 25th out of 26 competitors at the Sacramento, Calif., meet, throwing 199-05.
Should McGowan and Brubaker advance, they will compete in their respective finals on Saturday. The finals in the javelin will be held at 2:15 p.m. Mountain time, the finals in the 1,500 will be on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. Mountain time.
