Two athletes with University of Montana connections will be shooting for spots on the U.S. Olympic team this weekend.
Recent UM graduate Scott McGowan of Poplar has the sixth-best time among all American runners in the 1,500 meters, after running a career-best time of 3 minutes, 37.73 seconds last week in California. He will compete Thursday in the quarterfinals at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Sacramento.
McGowan closed out his career as a Grizzly by earning All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championshps in June. He finished seventh in 3:46.34 and picked up two team points for the Grizzlies.
McGowan also earned All-America honors in the 1,500 meters in 2002 and is a two-time All-American in the indoor mile.
McGowan is expected to make it into the semifinals, which are slated for Friday. The finals are on Sunday, with the top three finishers qualifying for the U.S. team that will compete next month at the Summer Olympics in Athens.
Bryan Anderson of Whitefish, a 2002 UM graduate, has qualifying for the Trials in the decathlon and will begin his competition on Friday in Sacramento. Anderson qualified with a point total of 7,769. Tom Pappas is the top-ranked U.S. athlete with a mark of 8,732. The decathlon ends on Saturday.
Two other Grizzly men had strong showings at their own nation's Olympic trials. Senior Antony Ford finished ninth at the British trials with a clocking of 14:11 in the 5,000 meters.
Junior Jas Gill took fifth place in the high jump with a leap of 6-9 at the Canadian trials.
