Jean Cornwall has been selected associate athletic director at The University of Montana, announced Griz Athletic Director Don Read. Cornwall replaces Marie Porter, who recently resigned from that position to spend more time with her family.
"We are very excited about Jean taking over as our associate athletic director," Read said. "She brings with her lots of credentials and experience here at the University and has an understanding of the working relationships of individuals in departments not only in athletics, but also across the campus.
"She is very popular among our coaches and our athletes," Read said. "She brings experience in the areas of compliance and academics, which are two very important areas to us. She is a Montana girl, born and raised, and of course attended The University of Montana, and we are very, very happy about her being here."
Most recently Cornwall served in the position of assistant athletic director for compliance and academic services in the fall of 2003. In that capacity, she oversaw the day-to-day operations of maintaining the athletic department's compliance with the NCAA, Big Sky Conference, and University rules and regulations.
Cornwall had been UM's Coordinator of Athletic Academic Services for almost five years. During that stint she oversaw UM student-athletes in academic progress, advised on course curriculum, tutoring, referred to campus support services, oversaw completion of general education requirements, and the upholding of NCAA academic regulations.
Jean previously served as UM's Coordinator of the Four Bear Four-Year Graduation Program from 1995-99. She served as an academic advisor, program assistant, assistant to the director and receptionist since she began work at UM in 1991.
A native of Lewistown, Cornwall received a B.A. in psychology from UM in 1995 and is pursuing a master's degree in public administration.
