Cross country teams open with fourth-, fifth-place showings

The University of Montana cross country teams opened their 2004 seasons on Saturday morning with fourth- and fifth-place showings at the 25th annual Montana State Invitational in Bozeman. The Grizzly women finished fourth, totaling 94 points on the three-mile course. The UM men took fifth, finishing with 115 points on the five-mile course.
Junior Shannon Johnson (Apple Valley, Minn.) had an impressive return from an injury that forced her to miss all but the first three meets of 2003, finishing in sixth place with a time of 17:50.63, 39 seconds behind winner Elise Greenwood-Bahr of Utah.
Finishing shortly after Johnson were freshmen Julie Schwengler (Rapid City, S.D.) and Allie Brosh (Sand Point, Idaho), who finished 15th and 16th, respectively, with times of 18:14.65 and 18:17.29. Sophomore Dominique Colberg (Palmer, Alaska), who finished in 26th with a time of 18:39.98, and freshman Kaci Calaway (Big Fork, Mont.), who took 31st with a time of 18:49.46, rounded out the top five for Montana.
Utah had three of the top four finishers to win with 42 points. Weber State was second with 51 points, and Montana State was third with 59 points.
On the men's side, Montana State had three of the top four finishers, including overall winner Casey Jermyn, to win with 41 points. Weber State was second with 65 points, Utah third with 79 points and Idaho State fourth with 90 points.
Sophomore Cee Jay Brown (Missoula, Mont.) was the Grizzlies' top finisher, taking 12th place with a time of 25:20.98. Sophomore Matt Winter (Billings, Mont.) was right behind Brown, finishing 14th with a time of 25:27.66.
Rounding out the top five for the Griz men were sophomore Richard Pemberton (Manhattan, Mont.), who finished 25th with a time of 25:52.38, freshman Dan Bingham (Toms River, N.J.), who finished 31st with a time of 26:22.27, and sophomore Fred Friesz (Polson, Mont.), who finished 35th with a time of 26:39.67.
The next meet for the Grizzlies is the Montana Invitational, which they host on Saturday, Oct. 2.
