Young Griz tennis players shine at Cougar Classic

The University of Montana women's tennis team opened the 2004-05 season on the road at the Washington State Cougar Classic at the WSU Tennis Courts in Pullman, Wash. The tournament field included Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Idaho, Montana State and WSU.
Freshman Cheyne Ursich defeated Kim Cabiling of Eastern Washington, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in the first round of No. 2 singles competition. Ursich advanced to the quarterfinals where she lost 6-0, 6-1 to Katy Clarke of Montana State.
Sophomore Malena Rosen won her first match of the season 7-6, 6-0 over MSU's Allison Frey in the first round of No. 3 singles competition. Rosen was defeated in the semifinals by Idaho's Efret Leopold 6-4, 6-0.
In the second day of play Ursich, fellow freshman Mari Castello and sophomore Colby Fannin were victorious in matches of the backdraw at No. 2 singles. Castello advanced to the backdraw championship where she fell to Sydney Leederhouse of Gonzaga, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6.
Castello, the freshman from Bellville, Ill., had success in doubles action as well. She advanced to the finals after being teamed with Sirrah Williams of Gonzaga. Castello originally received a first round bye with teammate senior Annabelle Janairo.
Castello/Williams defeated the tandem of Lederhouse/Humphrey of Gonzaga, 8-5 in the second round. Castello/Williams then topped another split team of Luetolf/Fodor (MSU/Wash. St) before falling to Sallai/Martinez of Washington State in the finals.
Griz doubles team Fannin/Ursich received two consecutive byes in the backdraw of doubles competition before beating Idaho's team of Shrubb/Ruman in the semifinals. Fannin/Ursich eventually lost to Toth/Gall of WSU in the backdraw championship.
The Grizzlies return to action October 8-10 when they host the UM Fall Invitational with the men's team.
