Volleyball drops season opener in five games to Bluejays

The University of Montana volleyball team dropped its season opener to Creighton on Friday afternoon at the Comcast New Mexico Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque. The Grizzlies (0-1) won the opening two games, 31-29, 30-28, but the Bluejays (1-0) stormed back to take the final three games and the match, 30-20, 30-21, 15-11.
Sophomore Claudia Houle, a transfer from Barton County (Kan.) Community College who was playing in her first match as a Griz, finished with a match-high 20 kills. The 5-10 outside hitter also added 11 digs.
Junior Audrey Jensen and sophomore EvaLyn Whitehead also finished with double-figure kills. Jensen had 10 kills and two errors in 18 attempts to hit a team-high .444. Whitehead had 10 kills and hit .292.
Starting setter junior Diana Thompson had 45 assists, 15 digs and two block assists.
Freshman Micaela Parker had eight digs, seven kills and two blocks, while fellow freshman Jackie White added 13 digs.
Jensen finished with a team-high five blocks.
Katy Grady and Ashley Williams both had 16 kills for Creighton, while Brittany Coleman had 56 assists and 14 digs.
The Bluejays hit .199 for the match to Montana's .149.
The match was the Grizzlies' only match on the tournament's opening day. Montana will be back in action on Saturday with matches against New Mexico (12:30 p.m.) and Northern Colorado (5 p.m.).
