Hey Griz fans,
I ended last week's entry in the hopes that I would be able to speak to you after a big win, and we were able to pull one out last weekend. It was an emotional roller coaster type of game full of a lot of momentum changes. There were turnovers galore, and a wide variety of big plays that ultimately changed the outcome of the game.
I thought the turning point was when our corner Jimmy Wilson tipped the ball out of the hands of Cal Poly?s 6-foot-8-inch wide receiver Ramses Barden and into the unsure hands of Van Cooper Jr. Barden was listed at 6 feet 6 inches tall, but trust me he was taller than that. That play, along with a few others towards the end of the game, really swung the momentum in our favor.
The Mustangs were very talented and they definitely had a few tricks up their sleeve. For example Cal Poly scored on a reverse from nine yards out which caught most of our defense, including yours truly, off guard. Cal Poly's option attack was also difficult for our defense to keep under control. However, we made plays when we had to and came up with some big stops and turnovers which allowed us to be succussful.
Another main factor that led us to the victory was the ability of our offense to run the ball. Lex and the offensive line did a great job of not only gaining yards, but also of chewing up the clock and keeping Cal Poly's offense off the field.
With Eastern losing to Weber State this weekend it puts the conference race in a interesting situation, and it makes this week's game all the more significant. Portland State is a very talented opponent. Running back Joe Rubin is already approaching the 2,000-yard mark this season. Rubin, among others, will pose a challenge to our defense. In order to be successful we will have to stop the running game.
We expect a very physical game, and we will do our best to prepare this week for Portland State?s offensive attack. It is our last regular-season game at Washington-Griz, and we will do our best to get a win not only for the fans, but for the seniors on the team as well.
Thanks for all of your support, and hopefully I?ll be able to talk to you after a big win for the second consecutive week.
Go Griz!
