Another big game and another big win. Simply put, we were able to rise to the occasion. The win against Portland State was crucial for a plethora of reasons, mainly because it put us in control of our own destiny. However, we are not satisfied nor are we looking past our next opponent. We realize that NAU will be more than ready for us and we will need to have another solid week of practice in order to prepare.
Solid practice is exactly why we played as well as we did against Portland State. We knew coming into the game that is was going to be a very physical contest, and it was just that. Big hits and big plays were abundant, and there was none bigger than the huge punt return by Tuff Harris in the first half. Big plays like that can without question change the momentum of the game. Along with Tuff's punt return, Torrey Thomas came up with an interception to halt the PSU offense.
Overall, our defense stood strong in the face of a very powerful and efficient offense. We were able to get stops at crucial times, and were able to stop the long drives that the Viking running game is accustomed to producing. Joe Rubin is a very talented running back and we did our best to contain and neutralize his productivity. On the other side, our offense was able to sustain drives and run the ball. That is always helpful not only in putting points on the board but also allowing our defense to rest.
We will need another great effort this week in order to be successful. It is never easy to play on the road, and we expect to get NAU's best effort. They are a talented squad with a lot of experienced players. This game is the only one that we will concentrate on, because this week?s game is the only one that matters. We will give it our best effort and hopefully come back to Missoula with a big road win.
GO GRIZ!
