Brosh, Winter top Griz finishers at NCAA Mountain Regional

Sophomore Allie Brosh finished 27th overall and junior Matt Winter was 50th to lead the University of Montana cross country teams to ninth- and 15th-place finishes at Saturday's NCAA Mountain Region Championships at the East Bay Golf Course in Provo, Utah. The race marks the end of the 2005 season for the Grizzly cross country teams.
Brosh finished the six-kilometer course in 22:24.0, 1:44.5 behind region champion Johanna Nilsson of Northern Arizona.
Senior Shannon Johnson had her highest finish within the team this season, placing as Montana's No. 2 runner (50th overall) in a time of 23:10.2
Rounding out the Grizzlies' scorers were freshman Kim Tritz (57th, 23:19.0), freshman Chelsea Burfeind (69th, 23:37.2) and junior Dominique Colberg (80th, 23:57.7).
Colorado won the women's regional team title with 53 points, narrowly edging out Brigham Young, which finished with 59 points. The Buffalos had four of their runners finish among the top eight. Northern Arizona was third with 93 points.
Montana finished with 283 points to grab ninth place, just behind Texas Tech (8th, 280 points) and just ahead of Air Force (10th, 284 points).
Other Big Sky Conference schools competing in the Mountain Region were Weber State, fifth with 148 points, Montana State, 12th with 298 points, and Idaho State, 16th with 409 points.
Winter finished the 10-kilometer men's race in 32:37.2, 2:09.0 behind region champion Bill Nelson of Colorado, who edged out teammate Bret Schoolmeester by half a second for the win.
Other scorers for Montana were junior Richie Pemberton (66th, 33:11.8), sophomore Dan Bingham (80th, 33:56.2), freshman Eli Hermann (81st, 33:59.2) and sophomore Duncan Hendrick (87th, 34:06.1).
Colorado easily won the men's region title, totaling 42 points with three runners in the top seven. Texas-El Paso was second with 79 points, Brigham Young was third with 86 points.
Other Big Sky Conference schools were Northern Arizona, fourth with 146 points, Weber State, ninth with 230 points, Idaho State, 10th with 233 points, and Montana State, 14th with 353 points.
The Grizzlies were 15th with 364 points.
