The University of Montana indoor track and field teams will have their final chance to qualify for the Big Sky Conference championships this Friday when the Grizzlies travel to Bozeman, Mont., for the MSU Last Chance Meet. The meet will include just Montana and Montana State and those schools' redshirts.
The meet starts at 4:30 p.m. with the field events. The timed events commence at 6:20 p.m.
"Just like the name of the meet says, this is a last chance for our athletes," coach Tom Raunig said Tuesday morning. "It's a low-key, low-pressure meet to try to get more people qualified for conference."
Next Up: Montana will compete at the Big Sky Conference meet, which will be held at Pocatello, Idaho, on Feb. 25-26. Athletes can either qualify for the meet automatically or have a top-12 performance in an event that does not have 12 automatic qualifiers.
The Montana Women: Currently seniors Lindsey Crawford (high jump) and Sarah Lenoch (pole vault), junior Tara Schwager (400 meters), sophomore Halladay Quist (triple jump) and freshmen Allie Brosh (mile, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters), Julie Schwengler (800 meters) and Rachel Hendricks (high jump) have qualified for the conference meet.
At last week's MSU Duals, Schwager qualified in the 400 meters and Brosh in the mile. Schwengler was already qualified in the 800 meters, but improved her altitude-adjusted time by over two seconds and now ranks No. 1 in that event in the Big Sky.
Crawford and Hendricks are tied for second among high jump qualifiers, Brosh is fifth in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters (among those using a 3,000-meter time) and eighth in the mile, Lenoch is tied for fifth in the pole vault, Quist is eighth in the triple jump and Schwager is eighth in the 400 meters.
Sophomore Teddi Anderson is a half inch short of qualifying in the shot put, but ranks eighth in the event.
Just out of the top 12 in their respective events are Quist, .07 seconds shy in the 55-meter hurdles and freshman Ashley Taylor, less than an inch shy in the pole vault.
The Montana Men: Currently seniors Trevor Gunlock (heptathlon, pole vault, long jump), Dan Casey (high jump), Shawn Patrick (triple jump) and Derin Gebhardt (shot put), juniors Jas Gill (high jump, triple jump) and Richie Pemberton (5,000 meters) and sophomores Matt Larson (55-meter hurdles) and Matt Winter (5,000 meters) have qualified for the conference meet.
The Montana men had no new qualifiers at last Friday's MSU Duals, but Gill and Pemberton both improved upon previous BSC qualifying marks.
Gill ranks first in both the high jump and triple jump among conference qualifiers, Gunlock ranks first in the heptathlon, second in the pole vault and third in the long jump, Larson is tied for first in the 55-meter hurdles, Casey ranks second in the high jump, Gebhardt ranks sixth in the shot put, Patrick ranks seventh in the triple jump, Pemberton ranks eighth in the 5,000 meters (among those qualifying with a 3k time) and Winter ranks 19th in the 5,000 meters (among those qualifying with a 3k time).
Athletes who have not qualified automatically but have top-12 marks include senior Jefferson Heidelberger (eighth in the 55 meters), senior Logan Funk (eighth in the 55-meter hurdles), Pemberton (eighth in the 3,000 meters), Gunlock (ninth in the 55-meter hurdles), sophomore Aaron Green (10th in the 55 meters), senior Drew Reppe (11th in the 400 meters) and freshman Jesse Loether (11th in the 800 meters).
On the outside looking in are Heidelberger, 14th in the 200 meters, .14 seconds from automatically qualifying, Winter, 14th in the mile, 6.05 seconds from qualifying, freshman Cody Henning, 14th in the 400 meters, .72 seconds from qualifying, and freshman Levi Zell, 14th in the pole vault, six inches from qualifying.
