Junior Jas Gill won the high jump for the third time in three years by matching his own school-record height of 7-1.75 and Montana got second-place finishes from seniors Trevor Gunlock in the long jump and Dan Casey in the high jump to highlight the Grizzlies' opening day of the 2005 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships.
The Montana men sit in second place after the first day with 34 points, trailing only Idaho State, which has 40.
The Grizzly women are in eighth place after day one with 8.5 points.
Gill picked up 10 points for Montana by meeting the NCAA provisional height of 7-1. Casey and Gunlock both collected eight points for their runner-up finishes. Casey jumped an indoor career-best 7-0.5. Gunlock had set a new indoor career best by long jumping 23-11.5 earlier in the day as part of the heptathlon, but he flew past that mark in the afternoon session, claiming second place with a jump of 24-1.
Accounting for the other men's points were junior Richie Pemberton's fourth-place finish in the 5,000 meters (15:04.35), which earned UM five points, and the Grizzlies' sixth-place finish in the distance medley relay (10:24.21), which added three.
Senior Sarah Lenoch picked up 2.5 points for the Montana women by tying for fifth in the pole vault with a height of 11-5.75. Freshman Allie Brosh finished seventh in the 5,000 meters in 18:21.30 to collect two points and the distance medley relay team earned four points with a fifth-place finish in 12:30.99.
