University of Montana junior Jas Gill jumped 7-1.5 to finish ninth at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday in Sacramento, Calif. Gill fell one place shy of becoming UM's first high jump All-American.
Gill, from Abbotsford, B.C., cleared 7-1.5 in his first attempt before bowing out in three tries at 7-2.5, a school-record height he leaped earlier this season at the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
In the high jump preliminaries, Gill and 15 others had all cleared 7-0.25 when the meet officials put an end to the event and advanced all 16 to the finals rather than risk losing enough athletes at the next height that fewer than 12 would advance to Saturday's finals.
Montana had a pair of outstanding individual performances at the NCAA championship. 2005 marks the second time in four years that Montana track and field boasted two All-Americans at the same outdoor championships, and just the fourth time in the history of the program.
Senior Dane Brubaker threw a 219-9 in the finals Friday to finish eighth, becoming the first javelin All-American in the history of Montana track and field. Senior Andrew Levin finished sixth in the decathlon Thursday with a point total of 7,558.
