Cox finishes sixth in Big Sky heptathlon

University of Montana sophomore heptathlete Bailey Cox finished sixth at the 2006 Big Sky Conference Multi-Events in Cheney, Wash., Thursday afternoon with 4,669 points. Cox entered Thursday's day-two events in sixth place and held that spot throughout to pick up three points for the Grizzlies entering Friday and Saturday??s championships.
Montana freshman Amber Aikins placed 11th with 4,417 points.
Montana State senior Erin Jones-Graf won the heptathlon with 5,362 points. Sacramento State junior Roshena Duree also cracked the 5,000-point barrier, posting a second-place total of 5,085 points.
Cox trailed Idaho State junior Erin Bell by 52 points entering Thursday's events and pulled within six points of the fifth-place athlete after posting a 16-8.75 long jump and 111-4 javelin, but Bell held on to fifth place by posting a time of 2:27.91 in the 800 meters to Cox's 2:29.63.
Cox finished 53 points ahead of Sacramento State freshman Carly Whitney, who finished with 4,616 points.
Aikins posted marks of 17-2.75 in the long jump, 85-11 in the javelin and 2:31.06 in the 800 meters in Thursday's events.

University of Montana sophomore heptathlete Bailey Cox is in sixth place and freshman heptathlete Amber Aikins is in ninth after the opening day of the 2006 Big Sky Conference Multi-Events at Cheney, Wash. Cox posted season bests in three of the four day-one events to post a score of 2,833, while Aikins also had season bests in three of the four events to total 2,705 points.
Montana State's Erin Jones-Graf leads the event with a day-one total of 3,226.
Cox and Aikins both opened the heptathlon by posting season-best marks in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump. Cox went 15.17 in the hurdles and 4-10.5 in the high jump, while Aikins went 15.06 and 5-1.
Cox passed Aikins in the day's third event, the shot put. Cox put up a mark of 36-10.25, the best among all 14 competitors, while Aikins went 29-4.75.
Both athletes concluded day one with season-best marks in the 200 meters. Cox posted a time of 26.04 while Aikins went 26.77.
The top eight places score points at the championships, and Aikins trails eighth-place Jill Stopa, a sophomore at Weber State, by just 12 points.
The second and final day of the heptathlon wraps up Thursday with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.
