University of Montana recruit Megan O'Reilly, a senior at Mt. Spokane High in Spokane, Wash., who signed with the Grizzlies on Nov. 9 during the NCAA's early signing period, continues to add to her already impressive list of high school accomplishments.
After winning the 2005 Washington Class 4A (large school) state cross country championship in 17:35 (five kilometer), the fastest time among all four Washington state classes and a new course record, O'Reilly competed at the unofficial high school national championships, the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships, which were held Dec. 10 in San Diego.
O'Reilly finished in fourth place, running the five-kilometer course in 17:36
During the indoor track and field season, O'Reilly ran a 16:26.37 5k at February's Husky Classic at the University of Washington. O??Reilly's time was the fastest indoor 5k time in U.S. high school girls history.
For comparison, Northern Arizona's Nicole Gueldemeister won the Big Sky 5k indoor championship in February with a time of 17:45.56.
In April, during the outdoor season, O'Reilly headed to Stanford University to compete against Olympians, pros and collegiate runners at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational. She finished 15th, running a 16:10.05, the third fastest outdoor five-kilometer time in U.S. prep girls history.
NAU's Gueldemeister won last month's Big Sky 5k race in 17:28.11.
Last weekend O'Reilly had a two-day double at the Washington outdoor track and field state meet, winning both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. It was O'Reilly's third state title in the 3,200 meters and first in the 1,600 meters.
Her 3,200-meter time of 10:05.81 was a state record, the fastest in the nation this year and the ninth fastest all-time among high school girls. O'Reilly's 1,600-meter time of 4:46.58 ranks seventh in the nation this year.
O'Reilly's two-mile time of 10:18.07 also tops the national performance list, while her 3,000-meter time of 9:29.18 ranks second.
On Sunday, O'Reilly will compete in the 3,200 meters at the 2006 adidas Golden West Invitational in Folsom, Calif., then compete June 21 in the 5,000 meters at the 2006 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships (for ages 19 and under) in Indianapolis.
If O'Reilly places in the top two in the 5k, she will represent the U.S. at the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships, which will be held Aug. 15-20 in Beijing, China, on the same track which will be used for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
