The University of Montana volleyball team hit .325 and had two players reach 20 kills in defeating Weber State University, 3-1, Saturday night at the West Auxiliary Gym. The Grizzlies, 6-6 overall, have won six straight and improved to 3-0 in Big Sky Conference play for the first time since 1994.
The six-match win streak is UM's longest since the 1999 season.
The Wildcats dropped to 4-14 overall, 0-4 in league play.
Montana was led by the big-hitting tandem of sophomore Micaela Parker and senior Claudia Houle, who both reached the 20-kill mark. Parker had 22 kills and just one error in 35 attacks to hit a career-high .600. Houle had 20 kills on .304 hitting and added 14 digs, her ninth double-double of the year.
Sophomore Jade Roskam added nine kills and hit a career-best .421. Senior Emily Sakis also finished with nine kills.
Junior Shelley Boyd had 37 assists and 13 digs, her third double-double in the last four matches and her fourth of the season. Freshman Taryn Wright had 28 assists and 10 digs, her third double-double of the season.
Montana finished with a commanding 82-58 digs advantage, led by junior Jackie White's 21.
Senior EvaLyn Whitehead had a team-high five blocks, while Wright had a match-high three service aces.
Weber State, which hit .218 for the match, was led by Leah Burmeister's 16 kills, Kristi Lindley's 31 assists and Keelee Kap's 22 digs.
Montana controlled game one, hitting .366 in its 30-22 win, and appeared to be in complete command of game two, jumping out to a 22-13 lead. But after a WSU timeout, the Wildcats went on a 14-5 run to tie the game at 27-27.
Both teams squandered game-point opportunities before Weber State broke a 31-31 tie with two quick points for the 33-31 victory.
WSU led game three, 20-17, but behind three Houle kills, the Griz scored seven straight points to take a 24-20 lead.
The Wildcats clawed back to tie it at 29-29, but an Houle kill made it 30-29 and Sakis and Wright followed with a combined block of WSU's Amy Dunford for the 31-29 win.
Montana rolled in game four, hitting .364 while limiting Weber State to .071 in the 30-17 victory.
The Grizzlies play their first Big Sky road matches next week at Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado.
