Griz women second, men third at Montana Invitational

University of Montana junior Allie Brosh and sophomore Eli Hermann led the Grizzly cross country teams to second- and third-place finishes Saturday morning at the Montana Invitational. Brosh finished second overall, covering the six-kilometer women's course in 21:52, while Hermann was 14th overall on the eight-kilometer men's course in 26:02.
Washington State won both the men's and the women's team titles, dominating the men's field with five of the top seven finishers, with only Matt Tyrrell (unattached) and Paul Limpf (Eastern Washington) breaking up the WSU top five.
The Cougars (18) were followed by Montana State (65), Montana (80), Idaho State (97), Eastern Washington (125), Big Sky Distance Project (167), Blackfeet Community College (198) and MSU-Billings (222). Great Falls also competed, but did not have enough runners to qualify in the team scoring.
The Washington State women placed four individuals in the top 10 and totaled 36 points. WSU was followed by Montana (52), Montana State (79), Idaho State (91), Eastern Washington (105), MSU-Billings (187) and Great Falls (194).
Brosh finished second to Paul for the second straight year, posting an identical time as her 2005 finish.
Freshman Kara DeWalt broke free of a pack of runners over the final quarter of the race to take fourth in 22:18.
Montana's top five was rounded out by sophomore Ashley Colbrese (12th, 22:46), sophomore Kim Tritz (15th, 22:56) and junior Kaci Calaway (19th, 23:18).
In the dual scoring, the Grizzlies fell to Washington State (34-23), but defeated Montana State (24-35), Idaho State (19-39) and Eastern Washington (20-40).
Also competing for the Grizzlies were freshman Brooke Andrus (21st, 23:34), Dominique Colberg (27th, 24:12), freshman Leigh Fredrickson (39th, 24:58) and freshman Megan Ravenscraft (42nd, 25:35).
The top five UM men all finished within 33 seconds of each other. Trailing Hermann, who was Montana's top finisher for the first time in his career, were junior Duncan Hendrick (17th, 26:12), freshman Michael Fisher (18th, 26:20), freshman Brett Carter (21st, 26:26) and sophomore Jesse Loether (25th, 26:35).
In the dual scoring, Montana split on the day, defeating Idaho State (22-34) and Eastern Washington (25-36) and falling to Washington State (46-15) and Montana State (32-23).
Other Griz runners were freshman Steven Gimpel (27th, 26:43), freshman Jon Metropoulos (31st, 27:11), freshman Mac Bloom (32nd, 27:17), sophomore Dennis Brands (35th, 27:27), senior Richie Pemberton (36th, 27:30), sophomore Zach Betz (40th, 27:42), sophomore Jeff Quickel (42nd, 27:49) and freshman Kyle Malerk (44th, 28:01).
