Griz get four more Big Sky qualifiers at WSU

The University of Montana indoor track and field teams had four more Big Sky Conference-qualifying performances Saturday at day two of the Washington State Invitational in Pullman, Wash. Senior Chris Mosbacher, sophomore Anya Wechsler and freshmen Kara DeWalt and Chris Hicks all added their names to the list of Grizzlies who will be competing at the 2006 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 23-24 at Bozeman, Mont.
In the dual scoring portion of the meet, the Montana women defeated Idaho, 60-59, and the partial team from USC, 60-47, while falling to Washington State, 86-35, and Utah State, 70-48.
The Griz men defeated Utah State, 67-53, and lost to Washington State, 86-35, and Idaho, 68-50.
Saturday's new Big Sky qualifiers on the women's side were DeWalt and Wechsler. DeWalt, who qualified last week in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, added the mile to those races, placing fourth in a time of 5:04.68.
Wechsler had an indoor career-best 11-7.75 in the pole vault to place fifth and also qualify.
On the men's side, Mosbacher qualified in the triple jump, while Hicks qualified in the heptathlon.
Mosbacher, who qualified for the Big Sky indoor and outdoor meets in the triple jump in 2006, qualified again, jumping 45-1 to surpass the qualifying standard by half an inch.
Hicks, who was in third after day one, finished third in the heptathlon with a qualifying 4,684 points. In day two's three events, Hicks placed fourth among the five competing heptathletes in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.09, finished fifth in the pole vault with a height of 12-1.5 and placed second in the 1,000 meters in 2:48.83.
Washington State's Kyle Schauble came back in day two to win the heptathlon with 4,974 points.
Junior Levi Zell, who qualified in the pole vault last week, placed second Saturday with an indoor career-best 15-5 to improve upon his qualifying mark.
Posting top-three finishes Saturday were senior Ryan Flaherty in the mile (third, 4:23.28), senior Matt Larson in the 60-meter hurdles (second, 8.24), junior Bailey Cox in the long jump (third, 17-9), junior Stephanie Radke in the triple jump (third, 32-9.75), junior James Brown in the 200 meters (third, 22.42), junior Jesse Loether in the 800 meters (second, 1:55.37), junior Andy Mulvaney in the high jump (third, 6-2.75) and freshman Brooke Andrus in the 800 meters (second, 2:18.20).
Montana competes next weekend at the Idaho Invitational in Moscow, Idaho. The meet starts Friday, Feb. 2 and concludes Saturday, Feb. 3.

University of Montana sophomore Brittany Williams won the women's weight throw and junior Curtis Bean had a Big Sky Conference-qualifying distance in the men's weight throw to highlight the opening night of action at the Washington State Invitational in Pullman, Wash. The meet continues Saturday with the resumption of the men's heptathlon at 10 a.m. (MTN).
The invitational wraps up at 4:20 p.m. (MTN) with the women's 1,600-meter relay.
Williams won the weight throw with a distance of 50-5.25. The mark was 20 inches shy of the Big Sky qualifying distance but still won the event by more than a foot over Washington State's Jessica Zita (49-4.5).
Senior Stephanie Bortz was fifth in the weight (47-1), sophomore Abbey Effertz was sixth (career-best 44-8.75) and freshman Michelle Lewis was ninth (35-9.25).
Bean placed seventh in the men's weight throw, topping his previous career best by over five feet to finish at 53-4.25, just making it past the BSC qualifying mark of 53-3.5.
Senior James Stanton placed 11th in the weight with a throw of 49-1.5.
Idaho's Matthew Wauters won the weight with a throw of 69-9.
In the men's long jump, the only other non-multi-event held Friday night, senior Chris Mosbacher placed fourth with a career-best 20-3, freshman Bryan Somers was also fourth in 20-3 and junior Andy Mulvaney was sixth in 18-7.
Utah State's Blake Hadfield won the event in 22-8.
In the women's pentathlon, junior Megan McKinnie, competing in her first career multi-events, placed eighth, collecting 2,311 points.
Junior Bailey Cox and sophomore Amber Aikins did not finish the pentathlon. Aikins had a DNF in the first event, the 60-meter hurdles, to end her day. Cox posted a 15.26 (55 points) in the 60-meter hurdles, a career-best 5-0.5 (666) in the high jump, a 36-6.25 (604) in the shot and a 17-10.75 (686) in the long jump but did not start the final event, the 800 meters.
McKinnie made it through all five events. She was sixth among the 10 athletes who started the pentathlon in the 60-meter hurdles (9.99, 714 points), did not record a height in the high jump, missing all three of her attempts at 4-5.5, was ninth in the shot (30-2.25, 477), eighth in the long jump (15-4.75, 477) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:34.06, 643).
Washington State's Diana Pickler and Julie Pickler went one-two in the pentathlon, with Diana eclipsing the NCAA automatic qualifying mark with 4,260 points and Julie surpassing the NCAA provisional qualifying mark with 4,003 points. No other competitor finished within 600 points of the Picklers, who finished first and second in four of the five events.
The men's heptathlon had its first four events Friday night. Montana freshman Chris Hicks sits in third place out of five athletes going into Saturday's 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters, posting a day-one total of 2,645 points.
Joel Johnson of the Aggie Track Club is in first with 2,707 points, while Washington State's Kyle Schauble is in second, three points behind at 2,704.
Hicks posted a 7.66 (662 points) in the 60 meters, went 21-2 (686) in the long jump, had a 37-7.75 (574) in the shot and finished at 6-3.25 (723) in the high jump.
Hicks had the day's best high jump by 2.5 inches and the day's second-best shot put.
