The University of Montana outdoor track and field teams have been picked for fifth- and seventh-place finishes in voting by the Big Sky Conference coaches the league office announced Friday. The UM men, who were fourth at the Big Sky indoor championships last month, finished tied for fifth with Eastern Washington in the voting, while the Griz women, who were fifth indoor, were selected seventh.
The 2007 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships will be held May 9-12 at Pocatello, Idaho, with the multi-events taking place Wednesday and Thursday, May 9-10, and the remainder of the events taking place Friday and Saturday, May 11-12.
Weber State was picked for first in both polls.
On the men's side, the Wildcats picked up four of the eight first-place votes to collect 46 points. (Northern Colorado is not eligible to compete at the league championships since individual champions are automatic qualifiers to the NCAA regional meets). Sacramento State, which won the men's indoor title by two points over WSU, got two first-place votes and 40 points.
The Hornets were followed by Northern Arizona, with 36 points, and Idaho State, with 33 points. NAU and ISU both got one first-place vote.
Montana and Eastern Washington tied for fifth with 22 points. They were followed by Montana State with 18 points and Portland State with seven.
"There is so much parody on the men's side right now," Griz track and field coach Tom Raunig said about the poll. "It's really a coin toss when you talk about who could be the winning team. As for our men, we could win the title with a really good meet, or we could finish as far back as seventh."
"Our goal is always to finish among the top teams in the conference, and our men have a realistic shot to do that."
Weber State, which won the indoor title by one point over ISU, led the women's poll with four first-place votes and 45 points. The Wildcats were followed by Idaho State, which picked up two first-place votes and 43 points, and Northern Arizona, which had two first-place votes and 38 points.
Those three were followed by Portland State (33 points) in fourth, Sacramento State (22) in fifth, Montana State (17) in sixth, Montana (16) in seventh and Eastern Washington (10) in eighth.
The Grizzlies finished in front of both the Hornets and Bobcats at the indoor meet.
"On the women's side, there is a little more spread between teams, with Weber State and Idaho State at the top and NAU and Portland State trailing them," Raunig said. "After that it's pretty close between fifth and seventh.
"Our women were fifth indoors, and that's a solid finish for us. We typically fare better outdoors because we have some strong performers in some of the outdoor events like the javelin, 400-meter hurdles and discus."
Montana's outdoor season opens March 30-31 with the Al Manuel Invitational at Dornblaser Field in Missoula. The women's and men's hammer throws take place Friday afternoon, with the remainder of the events following on Saturday morning and afternoon.
