University of Montana junior Baily Cox is in fourth place in the heptathlon after the opening day of the multi-events at the 2007 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Pocatello, Idaho. Fellow junior Megan McKinnie is in 13th place after day one, while freshman Chris Hicks dropped out of the decathlon after three events when he aggravated a previous knee injury.
The second and final day of the multi-events takes place Thursday. The heptathlon wraps up with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters beginning at 1 p.m.
Cox had three career bests and a season best among the heptathlon's four day-one events to score 2,992 points.
Idaho State's Audra Smith leads the heptathlon with 3,130 points. She is trailed by Portland State's Ashley Quay with 3,040 points, Idaho State's Cassie Merkley with 3,010 points and Cox. ISU's Sydney Wendt rounds out the top five with 2,924 points.
Cox opened the heptathlon with a 14.92 in the 100-meter hurdles, a career-best time which ranked third among the 13 heptathletes competing. She followed that up with another career best, a high jump of 5-1 that tied for seventh.
Cox's best performance came in the shot put, where her season-best effort of 37-5.25 ranked second. She finished out the day with a career-best 25.52 in the 200 meters, which ranked fourth.
McKinnie had two career-best marks on Wednesday. She opened the day with a career-best 15.42 to rank eighth in the 100-meter hurdles.
After going 4-9.5 in the high jump (13th) and 31-11.5 in the shot put (ninth), McKinnie posted her second career best, running a 27.16 in the 200 meters to place 11th.
McKinnie finished with a day-one total of 2,575.
Hicks made it through three of Wednesday's five events before having to drop out. He is scheduled to compete in Saturday's triple jump if able.
Hicks opened the decathlon with a season-best 11.58 in the 100 meters, tying for 10th among the 15 competing athletes. He finished eighth in the long jump (20-4.5), the event that most likely reinjured his knee, then placed 11th in the shot put (33-8.5) before opting not to try high jumping.
Idaho State's Levi Keller leads the decathlon after day one with 3,602 points. He is trailed by ISU's Nathan Capps (3,538) and Sacramento State's Robert Brazier (3,534).
