UM student-athletes honored with scholarships at Lindsay Banquet

MISSOULA??Thirty-one student athletes were awarded scholarships for the 2007-08 school year at the 15th annual Robert O. Lindsay scholar-athlete honors banquet last week. The banquet is named in honor of Dr. Robert Lindsay, UM??s faculty representative to the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He was dedicated to both UM and Grizzly Athletics. Dr. Lindsay passed away in September 1995. The banquet honors those student-athletes who excel in the classroom.
This year students were awarded scholarships from twenty-one different endowments. The names of the endowments and student-athlete recipients follow:
Ronald and Julia Blake Memorial Scholarship??established through a bequest from two avid sports fans who never missed a Grizzly football game in 40 years. Recipients are from the state of Montana. This year??s recipients are Shelley Boyd of Missoula and a member of the volleyball team who maintains a 3.48 GPA and is a senior in health and human performance; Johanna Closson, basketball, from Whitefish and a junior in fine arts with a 3.34 GPA; junior basketball team member Laura Cote, a physics major from Gardiner with a 3.67 GPA; Shawn Lebsock, football, a sophomore in business administration from Billings with a 3.78 GPA; senior Loni Perkins-Judisch, track and field from Conrad and a business administration major with a 3.43 GPA; Torrey Thomas, football, a junior with a 3.72 GPA in information systems and from Dillon; and junior Levi Zell, track and field from Missoula with a 3.44 in biology.
Janet and Michelle Hainline Scholarship??established in 1994 by Mr. W.E. Hainline, Jr. of Missoula in honor of his wife Janet and daughter Michelle who both passed away. His gift was prompted by his high regard for women??s athletic programs at UM. The recipient this year is Dana Conway of Billings. Dana, who plays basketball, is a junior in information systems with a 3.42 GPA.
Frank W. Milburn Scholarship??established in 1974 by the late Elizabeth Milburn in memory of her husband, Frank, who coached the Grizzly football team from 1926-1930, was athletic director and a professor of military science and tactics. This scholarship is awarded to a student-athlete making progress toward a degree and is selected based on leadership, scholarship, aptitude, sportsmanship, athletic ability and character. This year??s winner is Jordan Hasquet of Missoula. He is a sophomore in business administration with a 3.44 GPA and is a member of the basketball team.
Frank Nugent Memorial Scholarship??is named in memory of Frank Nugent from Miles City who was killed in action in World War II. He was a letter winner in football and basketball at UM. Mahlleace Tomsin, soccer, is this year??s recipient. Mahlleace is from Seattle, Wash., and is a junior in biology with a 3.36 GPA.
John Olson Family Scholarship??is named in honor of John and Marilyn Olson from Sidney who are dedicated supporters of UM. The scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving football student-athlete. This year the awardee is Andrew Selle, a freshman mathematics major from Billings with a 3.92 GPA.
Blaine and Ellen Bloomgren Family Scholarship??the Bloomgren??s, from Missoula, honor their two grandchildren, Blaine and Catie McElmurry, who left great legacies in UM athletics. This award goes to a deserving student-athlete who is due to graduate and who has represented the University well by his or her actions on campus and in the community. This year??s recipient is Matt Lebsock, football. Matt is a senior in business administration with a 3.76 GPA. He is from Billings.
Dean Erhard Athletic Award ??is named in honor of Dean Erhard and established by his mother Dorothy. Dean was an All-American in both cross country and track and field at UM in the 1970s. He is the current record holder in the steeplechase. This award is given to a deserving distance runner. Allie Brosh of Sandpoint, Idaho, is this year??s recipient. Allie is a junior in journalism with a 3.08 GPA.
Elaine Murray Scholarship??is endowed by Ray Murray in honor of his wife Elaine and awarded to an Olympic Sports female athlete who has the highest GPA. This year??s recipient is Krista Swanson of the golf team with a 3.99 GPA in education. Krista is a senior from Forest Lake, Minn.
Dr. Bill Reynolds Degree Completion Scholarship??is established from both Dr. Reynolds and his wife Joanne of Missoula and is awarded to a fifth-year men??s basketball player who has exhausted eligibility and who is on track to graduate. This year??s recipient is senior Stuart Mayes, a senior in psychology with a 2.25 GPA, from Elkhart, Ind.
Brian and Karen Sippy Scholarship??inaugural scholarship established by Dr. Brian and Karen Sippy of Missoula. They established this scholarship as an opportunity to support higher education and Grizzly athletics. Cameron Rundles of the basketball team is this year??s awardee. Cameron, from Minneapolis, Minn., is a freshman with an undeclared major. He has a 3.16 GPA.
Naseby Rhinehart Scholarship??this endowment pool of scholarships is named in honor of legendary UM athletic trainer Naseby Rhinehart. This year??s recipients are Loren Utterback, football, and Brittany Williamson, golf. Loren is a junior pharmacy major from Fort Benton with a 3.49 GPA, while Brittany is a senior in education with a 3.72 GPA. She is from Bemidji, Minn.
William ??Biff?? Hall Scholarship and Bruce E. Blattner Memorial Scholarship??are a part of the named scholarship under Rhinehart. Matt Martin, junior from Spearfish, S.D., is this year??s recipient of the Hall Scholarship, while Tyler Joyce, football, is the recipient of the Blattner Memorial Scholarship. Matt Martin is a member of the basketball team with a 2.82 GPA in communication studies. Tyler Joyce, a junior journalism major, has a 3.27 GPA.
Erik Ogren Memorial Scholarship??is named in honor of Erik Ogren by his wife Kathy. Erik was a Missoula businessman killed in an automobile accident in 1984. This year??s recipient is Jace Palmer of Missoula. Jace is on the football team and is a sophomore majoring in business administration with a 3.22 GPA.
1954 Griz Football Scholarship??the 1954 UM football team, with special recognition to Bob Miles, created this scholarship for a deserving member of the football team. This year??s honor goes to Kelly Kain, a junior in pharmacy with a 3.20 GPA. Kelly is from Great Falls.
Moose Miller Football Scholarship??was established in honor of David ??Moose?? Miller of Kalispell by his wife Shirley. Moose, who played football for the Grizzlies, passed away in 1999. Cole Bergquist is this year??s recipient. Cole has a 3.42 GPA in business administration. A sophomore, Cole is from San Clemente, Calif.
Shaun and Mary Corette Scholarship??Shaun and Mary Corette are from Chevy Chase, Md. Shaun played tennis at UM and is a member of the National Advisory Board for Grizzly Athletics. One of the scholarships is designated for a tennis player and the others to any participant of an Olympic Sport. This year??s awardees are Kaci Calaway, track and field, of Big Fork who is a junior in health and human performance with a 3.63 GPA; Halliday Quist, also of track and field and a senior in business administration with a 3.51 GPA from Kalispell; Krista Swanson of the golf team and from Forest Lake, Minn.; and Stuart Wing of Kempton Park, South Africa, and a member of the tennis team. Stuart majors in business administration and is a junior with a 3.32 GPA.
GSA License Plate Scholarship??from revenue generated from the sale of GSA license plates and going to one male and female athlete from Montana. This year??s recipients are Jade Roskam of the volleyball team and a junior in mathmatics with a 3.95 GPA from Helena and junior Kyle Ryan, football, a native of Billings majoring in business administration with a 3.16 GPA.
John Kolendich Memorial Scholarship??in honor of a former UM student who battled cancer. This scholarship goes to a deserving student-athlete who has exhausted playing eligibility to be used for his or her education advancements. This year Alicia Mills of track and field is the recipient. Alicia is a senior in health and human performance and is from Spokane, Wash. She has a 3.35 GPA.
Stockman Bank Scholarship??the Stockman Bank, based in Miles City, along with the William Coffee Family of Billings, endowed this scholarship to a deserving football team member who is a graduate of a Montana high school. This year Tom Martin of Columbus is the awardee. Tom is a junior who majors in business administration and has a 3.58 GPA.
B. Tim Stark Memorial Track and Field Scholarship??this inaugural award was established in 2006 by Tim??s wife Nancy and many dedicated friends and family. This scholarship is in honor of Tim, a former track and field hurdler and sprinter for UM who passed away in 2005 while hiking on Mount Rainier. The award is given to a deserving track and field athlete with preference given to a graduate of a Montana high school. This year??s inaugural recipient is Brook Andrus, a freshman journalism major from Big Fork with a 4.0 GPA.
