UC Irvine hands Griz 3-1 loss in season-opener

The University of Montana volleyball team lost 3-1 to UC Irvine Friday evening in the the season-opening match for both schools at the Ruby's Montana Invitational. The Anteaters improved to 1-0 with the 30-27, 24-30, 30-20, 30-20 win at the West Auxiliary Gym in Missoula.
The Griz (0-1) face a pair of matches on Saturday, the final day of the weekend tournament. UM has a noon (MTN) contest against Canisius (0-1) and a 7 p.m. tilt against Gonzaga (1-0). Gonzaga rolled to a 3-0 sweep of Canisius in Friday's earlier contest.
Three Grizzlies recorded double-figures in kills against the Anteaters, led by junior outside hitter Jade Roskam who recorded a team-best 14. Senior middle blocker Jessica Petersen tallied 11 kills while hitting a team-best .381. Also contributing offensively was junior outside hitter Micaela Parker who registered 10 kills with a .222 hitting percentage.
Sophomore setter Taryn Wright had a team-high 25 assists for the Griz, while senior setter Shelley Boyd added 11 assists of her own.
Senior libero Jackie White had a match-high 20 digs for the Grizzlies.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Kellermen registered a match-high 19 kills while hitting .341 for UC Irvine. Freshman outside hitter Kari Pestolesi added 14 kills and 13 digs for the only double-double of the contest for either team.
Tied up at 24 apiece, UC Irvine recorded six of the final nine points of game number one to take the early 1-0 advantage.
The Grizzlies held UCI to -.021 hitting in game number two, a 30-24 victory which evened the game up at 1-1.
The Anteaters hit a match-best .435 in game number three, with 15 kills on 23 total attacks. Montana, limited to .057 with 12 kills and 35 total attacks, fell 30-20 in the third game.
UC Irvine continued to hit for a high percentage, tallying 17 kills on 35 attacks to hit .343 in the fourth and final game. The Griz recorded 11 kills to 33 total attacks for a .152 hitting percentage before falling 30-20 in the final frame.
