University of Montana women's basketball coach Robin Selvig signed a new three-year contract recently, UM Director of Athletics Jim O'Day announced Monday. Selvig's new contract, which has a base salary of $135,000, replaces his original three-year deal.
Selvig signed his initial multi-year contract, worth $127,000, prior to the 2006-07 season when the Montana University System Board of Regents first approved long-term deals for head coaches of men's and women's basketball and football.
Prior to 2006-07, all coaches within the MUS system operated on one-year contracts.
The idea of multi-year contracts for coaches in basketball and football was heavily supported by UM President George Dennison, who was instrumental in getting the initiative ratified.
In addition to his base salary, Selvig also receives financial benefits from radio and television contracts, camps and clinics, and incentives.
The Board of Regents approved Selvig's new deal at a recent meeting.
"This contract shows our thanks and appreciation for the remarkable job Coach Selvig and his assistants have done over the first two years of the original three-year contract," O'Day said. "It is our intent to compensate coaches fairly for their excellence and commitment to the Griz and Lady Griz programs.
"Since he signed the original three-year deal, the Lady Griz have won two regular season Big Sky titles, appeared in WNIT and NCAA tournament games and continue to prosper in the classroom. Robin is the ultimate team player in the department, and for his leadership and commitment to Grizzly Athletics and The University of Montana, we feel he should be rewarded accordingly.
"We are very fortunate to have a person like Robin Selvig leading our women's basketball program."
Selvig will be entering his 31st season at Montana in 2008-09. He has a 30-year record of 697-199, a mark which ranks among Division I women's basketball's all-time leaders in both total victories and winning percentage (.778).
Selvig earned his 18th conference coach of the year award in March after leading the Lady Griz to their 21st regular-season conference championship. Montana hosted and won the 2008 Big Sky Conference Tournament, giving the program its 17th trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season with a 25-7 record, the program's 26th 20-win season under Selvig.
"I'm certainly happy to have signed another contract," Selvig said. "I appreciate the University's commitment to me and the Lady Griz program, and I look forward to coaching the teams that we'll have over the length of the new deal."
