Sophomore Austin Emry, competing in his first season in the multi-events, took another step forward when he cracked the 5,000-point mark for the first time Saturday, placing third in the heptathlon on the second day of the Mountain States Games in Pocatello, Idaho.
Junior Emily Eickholt, in the rarely run 600 meters, and sophomore Lindsey Hall, in the high jump, took home the Grizzlies' only event victories of the day.
Emry opened the day in second after Friday's four events. He hung on for third despite competing in two events Saturday - the 60-meter hurdles and pole vault - that are still almost new to the athlete who came to Montana as a high jumper.
Emry placed fifth in the hurdles in a time of 8.76, then broke 13 feet in the pole vault for the first time, going 13-9.25 to tie for third.
He finished the heptathlon off with a 1,000-meter time of 3:00.33.
Sacramento State's Sam Schur finished first with 5,291 points, Montana State's Jeff Mohl was second with 5,290.
Senior Evan Stokken moved up to fifth by the end of the meet, finishing with 4,659 points.
Stokken had the day's best hurdles time of 8.53, then went 13-9.25 in the pole vault and 3:09.06 in the 1,000 meters.
Eickholt won the 600 meters in a time of 1:35.21, and Hall led a one-two finish in the high jump with an effort of 5-5.75.
Hall was matched at 5-5.75 by sophomore Gwenn Abbott, who finished second after coming up just shy of her career best of 5-6.
On the women's side, junior Kesslee Payne finished third in the invitational mile in a time of 5:05.42, freshman Annie Moore was fourth in the invitational 800 meters in a time of 2:18.79, senior Jennifer Walter was fifth in the 60 meters in a time of 8.07, and Hall was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.75.
For the men, seniors Collin Fehr (8:46.87) and Lynn Reynolds (8:51.12) finished second and fourth in the invitational 3,000 meters, and senior Sean Clark was third in the invitational 800 meters in a time of 1:55.61.
In the sprints and hurdles, senior Don Danns placed fifth in the 60 meters in 7.10, freshman Cullen Bachman was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.49, and freshman Drew Owens took second in the open 400 meters in a time of 51.24.
Montana will compete at Montana State the next three Fridays, then return to Pocatello, Idaho, for the Big Sky Conference indoor championships, Feb. 25-26.
