Montana senior Austin Emry finished 12th in the heptathlon Saturday at the NCAA indoor national championships at Albuquerque, N.M. The Homedale, Idaho, native also finished 12th in the multi-events at indoor nationals in 2013.
Emry was sitting 11th after Friday's four events. He moved up to 10th after clocking the fastest time in the field in Saturday's opening event, an 8.09 in the 60-meter hurdles.
He slid down three spots with marks of 14-3.25 in the pole vault and 2:59.61 in the 1,000 meters. He ranked 13th in the former and 14th in the latter to finish with 5,476 points.
Emry's school record is 5,623. He scored 5,568 points two weeks ago to win the heptathlon at the Big Sky Conference indoor championships.
With his finish, Emry earned second-team All-America honors for the second straight year.
"To finish 12th in the nation in something is pretty good," UM coach Brian Schweyen said. "I think he came in wanting to do better and do more than he did, but he's pretty satisfied, so as his coach that's all I can ask for."
Duke senior Curtis Beach won the heptathlon with a score of 6,190. Georgia sophomore Maicel Uibo, with 6,044 points, was second. Arkansas senior Kevin Lazas, last year's heptathlon champion with 6,175 points, finished third with 5,973.
Oregon claimed both the women's and men's team titles at Albuquerque. The UO women scored 44 points to finish half a point in front of runner-up Texas and 3.5 points ahead of Georgia and Florida.
The men's side wasn't nearly as close. The Ducks scored 62 points to finish eight points ahead of second-place Arkansas and well ahead of third-place Florida, which scored 35.
Montana will open the outdoor season March 28-29 at the Al Manuel Invitational at Dornblaser Field.
