Junior Drew Owens ran a season-best time and finished eighth out of 60 athletes in the men's 400-meter hurdles Friday afternoon, and his performance highlighted Montana's final day of competition at the Mt. SAC Relays at Walnut, Calif.
The Grizzlies had more than a half dozen season bests Friday, but they did not produce the type of banner day with multiple lifetime bests and a school record or two that head coach Brian Schweyen had been hoping for.
"I don't know if it's because it's a really large, chaotic meet or that people were a little intimidated or what it is, but it's something," he said.
Owens has twice competed at NCAA regionals in the 400-meter hurdles, and that experience seemed to pay off at a meet that is even larger than regionals. His time of 52.43 won his nine-athlete heat and came within two-tenths of a second of his career best of 52.24.
"That was probably our best performance of the day," Schweyen said. "Drew ran a really nice race and a really smart race. He made up a lot of ground over the last 120 meters."
Montana's top event finisher was senior Lindsey Hall, who finished fourth in the women's javelin with a throw of 148-11.
Friday marked the return from injury of senior triple jumper Kellee Glaus, who hadn't competed since the Big Sky indoor championships. Glaus opened her outdoor season with a jump of 37-9.5.
And Friday marked the return to normal for freshman Reagan Colyer. The Big Sky indoor champion in the 800 meters missed time between the indoor and outdoor seasons because of injury, but she returned to the track last week and ran a 2:20.53 at Eastern Washington.
On Friday she was down to 2:11.85, a little more than three seconds off her career best.
In the men's 800, sophomore Cody Curtis ran a 1:54.46, his third time in three races this season running in the 1:54s.
In the men's 1,500 meters, junior Ben Williamson clocked a 3:52.58, junior David Norris a 3:53.72. For Norris it was a PR and a season best by more than 10 seconds.
Junior Dylan Hambright ran a season-best 48.34 in the 400 meters. In the women's race, senior Kourtney Danreuther posted a 54.69 to place 11th in her first attempt at that race this season.
Senior Keith Webber, at 16-6.75, and senior Kaleb Horlick, at 16-0.75, both had season bests in the pole vault to finish fifth and seventh, and senior Austin Emry ran a 14.48 in the 110-meter hurdles. That was a season best for Emry and came within one-hundredth of a second of his altitude-adjusted PR.
Montana will have a larger squad competing Saturday at the Long Beach State Invitational at Norwalk, Calif.
"We'll see what happens tomorrow, then go back and assess," concluded Schweyen.
