Griz finish third, fifth in Big Sky All-Sports standings

Montana's women's athletics programs finished third in the 2014-15 Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophy standings it was announced this week. UM's men's teams combined for a fifth-place finish.

Sacramento State used last weekend's outdoor track and field championship to overtake Northern Arizona and win the women's title with 78 points. NAU was second with 73.5 points, Montana third with 60.5.

The Hornets won their fifth women's All-Sports Trophy since 2007-08.

Sac State had a slow fall but the Big Sky's most successful winter and spring seasons. The Hornets won the indoor and outdoor track and field championships, plus the tennis title, and finished second in women's basketball, golf and softball.

Montana won Big Sky Conference regular-season championships in both soccer and women's basketball, and the Griz women's tennis team finished third, but no other programs had top-three finishes in 2014-15.

Montana has never won an outright women's All-Sports Trophy. The Grizzlies tied for first with Portland State in the 2010-11 standings.

The Grizzlies' most high-profile men's teams both had successful seasons in 2014-15. The basketball team tied for first in the regular-season standings with Eastern Washington, and the football team tied for second, as did the tennis team.

But the cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams all finished seventh or lower at the Big Sky championships, which cost the Griz in the tight men's standings, which are based on just six sports, compared to nine for the women.

Northern Arizona won its 12th All-Sports Trophy, second most to Weber State's 16, by winning the cross country and indoor track and field titles, and tying for first at the outdoor championships last week. The Lumberjacks also tied for third in basketball to total a winning score of 66.5 points.

Eastern Washington was second with 55 points, Montana State third with 51.66, Sacramento State fourth with 51 and Montana fifth with 49.66.
