
Ferris, Gonzaga down Montana in straight sets

McKayla Ferris, a junior outside hitter, recorded 20 kills on .471 hitting and Gonzaga hit .287 to drop Montana in straight sets Saturday morning at Spokane, Wash., on the second day of the Gonzaga Invitational.

The Bulldogs, whose only loss this season came to Washington, won their fourth straight match to improve to 4-1. The Grizzlies lost their third straight match to fall to 2-3.

Gonzaga won 25-18, 25-19, 25-21, its second straight-set victory of the tournament. The Bulldogs knocked off Wyoming 3-0 Friday night.

Montana was limited to .079 hitting, its lowest percentage of the season.

The Bulldogs established Ferris early in the match and rode her production to the victory. She had eight kills and one error on 12 swings to hit .583 in the opening set and was the difference-maker the rest of the match.

Imani Wimbush had eight blocks to help Gonzaga to a 14-4 advantage at the net.

Capri Richardson led Montana with nine kills on .389 hitting, and sophomore Brianna Gardner added five kills and a team-high three blocks. The rest of the team hit -.048.

Gonzaga built early leads in sets one and two on its way to convincing wins. Montana held a 17-16 lead in the third set before a 6-0 run by Gonzaga, sparked by back-to-back kills by Ferris, put the match out of reach.

Montana will face Wyoming (3-1) Saturday at 6 p.m. (MT). The Cowgirls face Utah Saturday afternoon.
