10/27/2016 8:41:00 AM | Men's Cross Country
With the Montana cross country teams already deep into their fall season, it's time to meet this year's Grizzlies.
Â
Micah Drew -- Senior, Boise, Idaho (Centennial HS)
Â
Why I started running: Other sports bored me.
Â
What I remember from my first race: Losing. By a lot. But I was 8.
Â
Trails, track or road: Trails every day.
Â
Solo or group run: Solo or in very small groups.
Â
Most memorable run: Last year a few teammates and I decided to do a "sufferfest," which is something heinous, often hilarious and always entertaining. We decided to try running up Mt. Jumbo, Sentinel, University and Dean Stone in one go. We did it the day before Thanksgiving, with four inches of snow on the ground. It took about 6.5 hours and I have the distinction of being the only one of the group who didn't end up in the hospital or with frostbite.
Â
Favorite meal the night before a big race: Free ones. Preferably with unlimited breadsticks.
Â
Favorite post-race indulgence: Recovery beer! And a good scone. Or any pastry for that matter.
Â
Favorite workout: The Church of the Sunday Long Run
Â
Workout I most dread: Sprints < 100m.="" my="" legs="" don't="" work="" that="">
Â
If I wasn't a runner, I would be: Fat. Or a climber.
Â
Go-to mantra when the running gets tough: It depends. Today Hakuna Matata was running through my head nonstop during my workout. WHEN I WAS A YOUNG WARTHOOOOOOOOOOOG. Go figure.
Â
Favorite time of the day to run: First thing in the morning, dusk or midnight.
Â
Favorite time of the year to run: They all have their perks. Fall weather is always a plus.
Â
Favorite place near Missoula to run: Smoke Jumper in the fall is currently my favorite. Or a good jaunt up Blue Mountain.
Â
Favorite place near your hometown to run: Somewhere among the 200+ miles of trails surrounding Boise. Camelsback, Hulls Gulch, Polecat, Three Bears ...
Â
Dream running location: Running the Centennial Trail in Idaho, top to bottom, would be awesome. Or running in Iceland or Ireland again.
Â
Athlete I'd most like to go for a run with: Jenny Simpson, Melissa Bishop, Bernard Lagat or Will "Fear the Beard" Leer.
Â
Trend in running I'm not a fan of: Fast people wearing basketball shorts.
Â
The number of pairs of running shoes I own: Hmm, in this house? Five pairs I wear on a weekly basis, five pairs of spikes, six pairs I haven't worn yet and 15 pairs of retired shoes.
Â
Â
Tucker Costain -- Junior, Helena, Mont. (Helena HS)
Â
Why I started running: My dog was caught in a hunter's trap, after I released it a mountain lion jumped out of the bushes. I threw my dog over my shoulders and started running. I've been chasing that high ever since.
Â
What I remember about my first race: The mountain lion
Â
Trails, track or road: Trails
Â
Solo or group run: Solo
Â
Most memorable race: John Colter in 2014. Running in first place, took the wrong trail, misled about 200 runners, waited for a few other boys to have a conversation as to where the race course went, sprint off, gain 200-meter lead only to go the wrong way again and lose it, swam across river, sprint finish for the win. Set a course record. True story.
Â
Favorite meal the night before a big race: Free ones
Â
Favorite post-race indulgence: Coke. Like Coca-Cola.
Â
Favorite workout: Hills
Â
Workout I most dread: Not hills
Â
If I wasn't a runner, I would be an: Unhappy boy with love handles
Â
Go-to mantra when the running gets tough: I think I can, I think I can, I think I can, ad infinitum.
Â
Favorite time of the day to run: Night runs
Â
Favorite time of the year to run: Autumn
Â
Favorite place near Missoula to run: Rattlesnake
Â
Favorite place near your hometown to run: The trails
Â
Dream running location: Here is just fine
Â
Athlete I'd most like to go for a run with: Matt Barker
Â
Trend in running I'm not a fan of: Fast people who wear basketball shorts.
Â
The number of pairs of running shoes I own: It's complicated.
