Â
Â
Dillon May -- Sophomore, Maple Valley, Wash. (Tahoma HS)
Â
Why I started running: My brother ran cross country and track in high school, and I wanted to be just like him.
Â
What I remember about my first race: I was in fourth grade and it was the day I had been training weeks for, the Tahoma School District Elementary Track Meet. The only problem was I had forgotten it was that day and I had worn jeans to school. I ended up running the 400 meters in my blue jeans, and it was bad. Zero out of ten would recommend.
Â
Trails, track or road: Definitely trails. My studies have shown there is a direct, positive relation between running trails and the happiness of your knees.
Â
Solo or group run: Group, the more the merrier!
Â
Most memorable race: The 800 meters at state in track. I bought a pair of socks that had "State" on them at the cross country state meet, vowing to wear them for the state track meet. When the day came, I wore the socks. One hundred meters into the race I was dead last and my feet were on fire because of these socks, but I knew I looked good.
Â
Favorite meal the night before a big race: My mom's spaghetti and garlic bread. Ten out of ten would recommend.
Â
Favorite post-race indulgence: Ben and Jerry's ice cream
Â
Favorite workout: Hills. They're really fulfilling.
Â
Workout I most dread: Hills. They're really painful.
Â
If I wasn't a runner, I would be a: Better competitive eater than Noah
Â
Go-to mantra when the running gets tough: Burn and turn
Â
Favorite time of the day to run: Early morning
Â
Favorite time of the year to run: Autumn
Â
Favorite place near Missoula to run: Anywhere. Man, it's so beautiful here.
Â
Favorite place near your hometown to run: Cedar River Trail and Lake Wilderness Trail
Â
Dream running location: The Chinese Wall in the Bob Marshall Wilderness
Â
Athlete I'd most like to go for a run with: It's a tie between Russell Wilson and Evan Jager.
Â
Trend in running I'm not a fan of: The lack of speed suits in cross country.
Â
The number of pairs of running shoes I own: Two pairs of trainers, four pairs of spikes, one pair of flats, and if you count running to class, one pair of Vans.
