Montana lands 43 on winter academic list

The University of Montana placed 43 student-athletes on the 2015-16 Academic All-Big Sky Conference teams, the league office announced recently.

Montana's total ranked third in the conference behind Idaho State's league-high 58 selections and Eastern Washington's 48. Montana State was fourth with 40.

Six other schools had 34 or more selections: North Dakota (39), Northern Colorado (39), Northern Arizona (38), Sacramento State (36), Southern Utah (36) and Weber State (34). Idaho had 29, Portland State 19.

Coach Brian Schweyen's women's and men's squads combined for 34 selections, a total that ranked third among Big Sky track and field teams.

Coach Travis DeCuire's men's basketball team had four selections, the league's third-highest total behind Idaho's and Eastern Washington's six, and coach Robin Selvig's Lady Griz totaled five, which tied for ninth. Northern Arizona led all basketball teams, men's or women's, with eight honorees.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors, student-athletes must have participated in at least half of their team's competitions and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2.

Four Montana student-athletes made the list for a fourth time, capping a freshman-to-senior run of excellence: Hannah Doran and McCalle Feller of the women's basketball team, and Emily Mendoza, the 2015 GoGriz.com Person of the Year, and Anna Pershouse of the women's track and field team.
