Montana continues its growth in Bozeman

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana traveled to Bozeman on Friday morning to compete in a four-team dual meet at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. The Grizzlies were competitive against Big Sky foes Idaho State and Montana State, in addition to Utah State of the Mountain West.
Montana earned five event wins and five runner-up finishes. A total of 17 athletes in 19 events scored for the Griz.
"We had some really nice performances," head coach Brian Schweyen said. "Overall, we're up."
Competing for the second consecutive week, and for the first time against an all-Division-I field, Montana rose to the occasion in several events.
Senior Alanna Vann was Montana's top performer in both the 60 meters and 200 meters, and was the top overall performer on the day in the 60. Her adjusted time of 7.79 was a lifetime best. In the 400 meters, sophomore Carly Smiedala also had a lifetime best, winning the event with a 55.68.
Schweyen singled out three other athletes on the track side. Emily Cheroske placed third in the women's 800 meters (season-best 2:14.37) and Jacob Lamb finished runner-up on the men's side (career-best 1:54.43). Cheroske had been hurt and had limited training leading up to Friday's action, while Lamb was feeling under the weather and didn't initially want to race, but both excelled.
Andrea Baratte earned a personal best in the mile (4:10.36), and what excites Schweyen more than the freshman's time is that he has the potential to get even better.
"He had a good opener, and he'll even admit that he wasn't mentally in it when he needed to make a move," Schweyen said. "For a freshman to know that is great."
Montana once again had plenty of success in the field events. Junior Matt Quist won the men's high jump with a height of 7-0.25, which is "knocking on the doors of nationals," according to Schweyen. The mark is the best by a Big Sky athlete so far this season. In the women's high jump, Montana was the only school with three top-five performers. Sophomore Jane Booth reached 5-4.25 to finish second, while Ziola and freshman Abby Dodge tied for third place at 5-2.25.
Ziola won the long jump with a personal best of 18-6.5, the longest of the season by a Grizzly, while teammate Jenna Dukovcic barely missed scoring (fifth; 17-1.5). It was the same on the men's side, with freshman Jordan Stow placing third (21-6.25) and sophomore Grant Whitcutt finishing fifth (20-5.25).
After a setting a lifetime best a week ago, sophomore Kayla Holmes was once again strong in the weight throw (54-4.75; second). On the men's side, freshman Deszmon Humphries was Montana's top performer (53-11; fifth). Humphries placed sixth in the shot put, with freshman teammate Brent Yeakey finishing just ahead of him (50-5.25; fifth).
"A lot of people I'm talking about are freshmen," Schweyen said. "That's what's exciting and fun. We know what we have in terms of juniors and seniors, some of which are redshirting, but to have a young group come in and do that makes it exciting for the future."
Charlie Bush was Montana's top performer in the pole vault, placing third (career-high-tying 15-5), while Stow placed sixth (13-1.5). Courtlynd Brown was Montana's top performer in both the 60 and 200. In the 400, Montana's Sterling Reneau finished runner up and in the 60-meter hurdles Chase Armstrong placed third.
On the men's side, Montana defeated Idaho State, 70-69. The Griz fell to Utah State, 71-64, and to Montana State, 89-55. The women were defeated by Idaho State (72.5-64.5), Montana State (79-66) and Utah State (70-63). The Grizzlies did not compete in the relay events.
Montana will be back in action next weekend in Seattle for the UW Invitational.

Freshman Jansen Ziola was all over the meet, winning the long jump, placing third and scoring in the high jump, and finishing sixth as Montana's top performer in the 60-meter hurdles. It's a feat that Schweyen said is hard to do, bouncing from event to event, but makes her performance all the more impressive.Carly Smiedala!
