SEATTLE, Wash. – Montana's field athletes stole the show on Saturday, coming up with multiple top performances against some of the world's top athletes at the UW Invitational.
Sophomore Jane Booth placed third out of 42 athletes in the women's high jump, one of the top marks of her career. Meanwhile, freshman Abby Dodge set a lifetime best of 5-3 in the event, placing 12th. Montana was the only school to have two athletes finish in the top 15, and was one of two schools to have a pair of athletes reach 5-3.
Freshman Deszmon Humphries continued to show dominance in the men's weight throw, reaching 60-2.5 on his sixth and final throw. The mark won his heat and was good for fifth place out of 28 competitors. It was also a lifetime best by nearly a half foot and the third-best mark of the season by a Big Sky athlete.
The top performance on the track was by Carly Smiedala, who ran a 2:10.56 in the women's 800 meters. The sophomore mark's was a lifetime best by more than 3 seconds and the second-best performance by a Big Sky athlete this season. She finished 10th out of 61 athletes.
Other highlights on the day included:
Sophomore Jonathan Eastwood, who entered the weekend holding the top 5,000 meters time in the Big Sky Conference this season, shaved a full 2 seconds off of his previous top time, running a 14:38.80. Against a competitive field, Eastwood placed 17th out of 54 athletes. Kayla Holmes and Mariah Harvey were near the upper half of the weight throw, placing 22nd and 26th, respectively. Holmes reached 52-2 on her second throw; Harvey recorded a lifetime-best 50-8.25 on her final throw.
Overall, the weekend was a success, according to head coach Brian Schweyen. For the first time this season, athletes had to reach a qualifying standard in order to travel and compete, meaning the field was stacked with top athletes from around the country – including several national qualifiers and Olympic participants.
Next up, Montana will travel to Moscow, Idaho on Friday for the Idaho Duals.
