Cross country teams honored for academics

The Montana men's and women's cross country squads both earned All-Academic Team honors recently by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The 12 members of coach Vicky Pounds' men's team had a 3.31 average cumulative GPA after the fall semester to meet the USTFCCCA's requirement of 3.0 for inclusion on the list.

The dozen members of Pounds' women's team had a GPA of 3.2 following the fall.

A total of 423 NCAA Division I teams earned USTFCCCA honors, 228 of them women, 195 of them men.

UC Davis had the top team GPA on both the men's and women's lists. The Aggie women had a GPA of 3.85, while UCD's men had a 3.8.

Portland and New Mexico were named the USTFCCCA Scholar Teams of the Year for having the highest finish at nationals in November while meeting the 3.0 minimum requirement.

The Pilots finished second in the men's race to Northern Arizona, while the Lobos won the NCAA women's title for the second time in three years.

Grant Fisher of Stanford and Karissa Schweizer of Missouri were named USTFCCCA Scholar Athletes of the Year.
