Montana records top team performance of season in Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho – Montana had its best overall result of the season on Friday, defeating three of four teams in the 2018 Idaho Duals. Both Montana's men's and women's teams defeated Big Sky foes Idaho and Portland State, in addition to beating Gonzaga.
On the men's side, Montana beat Gonzaga 65-14, Idaho 73-56 and Portland State 60-46. The Griz women defeated Gonzaga 82-15, Idaho 65-60 and Portland State 69.5-41.5. Eastern Washington went a perfect 8-0 on the day, including wins over Montana (81.5-56.6 on the men's side, 72.5-59.5 on the women's side).
The Grizzlies had three individual winners, in addition to winning the 4x400 meter relay.
Sophomore Carly Smiedala won the 800 meters by more than 5 seconds (lifetime-best 2:10.25). She has competed in the event twice this season, finishing in the 2:10 range both times. In addition to Smiedala, Emily Cheroske (third; 2:15.81), Madeline Hamilton (fifth; career-best 2:19.96) and Megan Franz (sixth; 2:21.30) also performed well.
Sophomore Jane Booth remains the Big Sky's top athlete in the high jump, reaching 5-6 to win the event for the third time this season. Freshmen Jansen Ziola and Abby Dodge (5-2.25) were also among the best in the field. Ziola had a busy and strong day, also winning the long jump (18-1.75).
In the women's 3,000 meters, Montana placed second through fourth, only trailing Maryn Lowry, who was competing unattached. Senior Reagan Colyer, competing in the event for the first time this season, ran a 10:19.08 to finish second. Samantha Engebretsen (10.20.07) and Jessica Bailey (10:22.54) were third and fourth, respectively.
In the men's shot put, Montana also placed second, third and fourth. Freshman Brent Yeakey threw 52-9.5 to finish runner up (half-inch from his personal best), followed by Deszmon Humphries (third; lifetime-best 50-4) and Oliver Grajeda (fourth; 46-10.75). Additionally, Humphries placed fourth in the weight throw (53-1.75). Montana also had three of the top-five finishes in the men's 800 meters. Jacob Lamb placed second (1:54.48), followed by Karsten Pease (third; 1:54.50) and Andrea Baratte (fifth; 1:55.25); all three times were season bests.

- In addition to a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters, Baratte placed second in the 3,000 meters, recording an 8:48.38, during his first time ever competing in the event.
- Montana placed second and third in the men's pole vault. Charlie Bush reached 14-9 (second), while Grant Whitcutt jumped 13-9.25 (third). Bush was also Montana's top performer in the long jump (fourth; 20-3.5).
- Carla Nicosia (second; season-best 37-1.75) and Madison Neufeld (third; 36-9.5) both scored in the women's triple jump.
- Kayla Holmes (55-7.75) and Mariah Harvey (career-best 52-4) placed third and fifth, respectively, in the women's weight throw.
- Madeline Hamilton (third; 5:11.12), Megan Franz (fifth; 5:12.25) and Jessica Bailey (sixth; 5:12.33) finished high in the women's 1 mile.
- In addition to winning the long jump and placing fourth in the high jump, Ziola placed second in the 60-meter hurdles, improving from a 9.11 in the prelims to 9.08 in the finals. Jenna Dukovcic placed fourth (9.68).
- Rhett Streeter and Courtlynd Brown both qualified for the finals in the 60 meters. In the finals, the two tied for fifth place with a 7.18.
- Jacob Price was Montana's top performer in the triple jump (fourth; 41-3.25). He was sixth in the long jump (19-11.5).
- Chase Armstrong was Montana's top performer in the 60-meter hurdles (fourth; season-best 8.35) and the 200 meters (ninth; 23.03).
- Mane (26.25) and McLeod (27.07) finished seventh and 10th, respectively, in the 200 meters. McLeod also was Montana's top performer in the 400 meters (sixth; 1:00.27).
- Chloe Seferos was Montana's top pole vaulter, reaching 11-5.25.
- Dillon May was Montana's top performer in the 1 mile, placing 10th with a lifetime-best time of 4:22.73.
