MOSCOW, Idaho – The 2018 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship officially got underway on Tuesday with the beginning of the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon. Six Grizzlies are competing in the multi-events, which will conclude on Wednesday.
Through four events, Jaree Mane is Montana's top performer in the women's heptathlon. The freshman earned 2,849 points on Tuesday, thanks in large part to her first-place finish in the shot put. On the men's side, sophomore Josh Riley earned 3,641 points through a consistent five events. Both Griz athletes are in third place out of 15 competitors.
Mane, who competed in the shot put just twice this spring, reached a distance of 35-5.75 on her second throw. That gave the Lewistown native the lead through two rounds – and would have tied for first overall. However, she improved another 1.25 inches on her next throw to finish with a career-best 32-7.
Mane was also Montana's top finisher in the 200 meters with a PR time of 25.60 (fourth). She placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.14) – a PR by a full second – and 10th in the high jump (4-10.5) – a PR by an inch.
Hannah Coburn, a versatile athlete from Missoula, sits in sixth place. The sophomore placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.68), in addition to upper-half finish in the shot put (32-5.5; sixth place) and 200 meters (26.27; seventh). Coburn cleared 4-11.75 in the high jump (ninth).
Junior Jenna Dukovcic's best performance of the day came in the shot put, placing sixth with a top distance of 32-5.5. The mark was a PR by 8 inches. She cleared 4-11.75 in the high jump (ninth), and ran the 100-meter hurdles in 16.16 (14th) and 200 meters in 27.43 (14th).
Kristen O'Handley (Portland State) leads the field with three events remaining, scoring 3,062 points on Tuesday. Sacramento State's Emilia Del Hoyo (2,960) and Idaho State's Ashley Vanvleet (2,958) are in second and third, respectively, just ahead of Mane.
Sophomore Josh Riley, who placed sixth at last year's outdoor Championships, is once again in line to score. Riley was Montana's top men's performer in four of five events. His top performance came in the 400 meters, placing second with a time of 49.12 – a PR by more than a half-second.
Consistency throughout the day really aided Riley, who also was third in the shot put, reaching 38-8.25 on his first throw – a PR by more than 2.5 feet. Riley was also UM's top performer in the 100 meters (11.29, seventh place) and long jump (21-5.5, sixth). He reached 6-2.5 in the high jump, also good for an upper-half finish (seventh).
Fellow sophomore Grant Whitcutt was the field's second-best high jumper, earning a height of 6-5. The measurement tied the event winner, EWU's Forrest Wallace, but Wallace cleared the height on his first attempt versus Whitcutt on his third. Whitcutt placed eighth in the long jump (21-0.5), ninth in the shot put (PR 37-0.25), 12th in the 400 meters (54.13) and 13th in the 100 meters (11.79).
Morgan Eitel finished his first day at the Championships with a time of 11.68 in the 100 meters (11th place), a distance of 20-1.75 in the long jump (12th), a mark of 35-1.75 in the shot put (13th) a height of 5-10 in the high jump (11th) and a PR in the 400 meters (53.78)
Following Riley in third place, Whitcutt sits in eighth place (3,334) while Eitel is in 12th (3,119). Montana State's Mason Storm is the current leader (3,884), followed by Portland State's Donte Robinson (3,722).
Action will continue Wednesday at 11 a.m. MT. Live results can be tracked online.
