Lackland-Henry, Mendez pace Montana in Provo

Sophomore Olivia Lackland-Henry and junior Joel Mendez led the Montana cross country teams on Friday as the Grizzlies wrapped up their seasons at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Provo, Utah.

Lackland-Henry placed 72nd, covering the six-kilometer women's route at the Timpanogos Golf Club in a time of 22:15. Beatrix Frissell also finished in the top 100, running a 22:40 to finish 86th.

Northern Arizona junior Taryn O'Neill won the women's race in a time of 20:17.

New Mexico, which is ranked second nationally, won the region championship with a score of 62 points to defeat No. 3 Colorado (83) and No. 4 BYU (107).

Colorado State (116) and Utah (146) rounded out the top five.

Racing a 10-kilometer cross country course for the first time as a Grizzly, Mendez clocked a time of 32:05 to finish 72nd.

Jordan Hansen and Ben Vanderbosch also finished in the top 100. Hansen, a freshman, placed 93rd in a time of 33:05. Vanderbosch was 98th in a time of 33:19.

BYU, with four runners among the top nine, knocked off Northern Arizona, the nation's top-ranked team, 42-57. Colorado (83), Air Force (130) and Southern Utah (152) made up the rest of the top five.

BYU's Conner Mantz ran to a winning time of 29:39 to defeat Northern Arizona's Nico Young by a second.
