Montana opens Bengal Invitational with 2 event wins, 10 sprinters advancing

POCATELLO, Idaho – Montana opened the two-day Bengal Invitational on Friday with a pair of event wins and several Grizzlies advancing to Saturday's finals.

In the field, Tanessa Morris was once again victorious in the women's hammer throw, reaching a top distance of 186-10.75. Morris, who leads the Big Sky Conference this season, won the event by nearly 10 feet. The junior is now a perfect 4-for-4 on the season.

Montana showed its depth in the men's javelin, with the Grizzlies going 1-2 and having all four throwers ranked in the upper-half of the field. Montana's quartet of Dylan Kipp (first), Evan Todd (third), Everett Fred (eight) and Matthew Hockett (ninth) are among the Big Sky's best in the javelin, and they once again showed it on Friday.

Todd, a Kalispell, Montana, native, has finished runner-up to Kipp in his first two collegiate meets, but on Friday the freshman picked up his first career event win, throwing a personal-best 218-11 – the second-best throw in the Big Sky this season.

Kipp – the Big Sky leader – placed second (210-6.25), followed by Fred (188-4) and Hockett (182-6).

On the track, Montana had 10 athletes advance to the finals across the women's 100 meters, men's 200 meters, women's 200 meters, men's 400 meters, women's 400-meter hurdles and men's 400-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Cade Johnstone had an impressive showing, posting the best time in not only the men's 200 meters (21.60) but also the men's 400 meters (PR 47.49). He will have an opportunity to stay on top during Saturday's finals. On the season, Johnstone has yet to lose a race.

Also qualifying in multiple events was sophomore Jansen Ziola. The versatile Canadian athlete had the third-best time in women's 200 meters (PR 24.57) and the third-best time in the 100-meter hurdles (14.04). Teammate Ailsa Gilbert (PR 14.35, sixth) also qualified for Saturday's finals in the 100-meter hurdles.

Colton Hess (55.15, sixth in the men's 400-meter hurdles); Cutter Thatcher (55.87, seventh in the men's 400-meter hurdles); Emma Normand (12.30, seventh in the women's 100 meters); Kip Krebsbach (22.28, eighth in the men's 200 meters); and Holly Sudol (1:03.98, eighth in the women's 400-meter hurdles) were Montana's other runners who advanced to the finals.

In the distance events, junior Kyle Peterson placed fourth in the men's 10,000 meters (PR 31:26.50). In the men's 1,500 meters, the Grizzlies had five runners compete, with all five placing in the upper-half and Quincy Fast (3:57.11, 9th) and Truman Cowan (3:58.76, 11th) in the upper-quarter. On the women's side, both Beatrix Frissell (PR 4:45.72, 8th out of 34) and Olivia Lackland Henry (PR 4:50.16, 15th) were in the upper-half.

Additionally in the field, Montana's Peterson Bohannon placed third with a top jump of 23-5.75. The Grizzlies had a strong showing in the event, with all three jumpers ranked in the top six out of 27 competitors. Jason Upton placed fifth (PR 23-1.5), followed by Jordan Stow (sixth, 23-0.25). Matt Ward, with a top throw of 185-3.5, finished second in the men's hammer throw.

Saturday's action will begin at 11 a.m. with the women's discus and triple jump. In addition to the finals for 10 running events, 10 field events, six additional running events and four relays will take place. Competing in the Bengal Invitational are athletes from Big Sky schools Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Southern Utah and Weber State, in addition to BYU, Utah State, Utah Valley and others.
