Volleyball returns to normalcy with complete 2021 schedule
7/8/2021 11:55:00 AM | Volleyball
Coming this fall, fans will once again get to experience a full volleyball season. Montana announced its 2021 schedule on Thursday, featuring a complete non-conference slate, a return to a standard home-and-home conference format, and most importantly, full intentions to host fans inside Dahlberg Arena.
Â
After Montana's 2020 season was shifted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Grizzlies played an abbreviated, 16-match schedule in the spring of 2021, featuring only Big Sky matches and an altered format that saw teams playing each other on back-to-back days, in the same venue.
Â
Montana intends to be able to fully welcome fans into Dahlberg Arena this fall for volleyball matches, with season-ticket information coming in the coming weeks, and single-match tickets going on sale later this summer.
Â
"So much over the past year has forced us to pivot in so many ways, so it hasn't fully hit me yet, but seeing these dates on the calendar, and seeing the reality of a season right in front of us, is super motivating," head coach Allison Lawrence said. "With so much uncertainty and change over the past several months, it was a stressful time for all teams to create a schedule, so it's really rewarding to get to announce these dates to our fans."
Â
Montana will play four weeks of non-conference action, including a home date vs. Seattle on Sept. 1.
Â
The Grizzlies' season opens in Charleston, South Carolina, the weekend prior, with Montana facing Kennesaw State, Eastern Michigan and host College of Charleston over two days (Aug. 28-29).
Â
Montana will return to Missoula for its home opener vs. the Redhawks, before traveling east again, this time to play in a tournament at South Dakota State. The weekend features matches against the Jackrabbits, Wichita State and Cal Baptist (Sept. 3-4).
Â
Montana will then play in a tournament at North Dakota, facing Green Bay, Drake and the Fighting Hawks (Sept. 10-11), before a one-off match against CSU Bakersfield in Cheney, Washington (Sept. 18).
Â
The four weeks of non-conference action will prepare Montana for a full Big Sky slate, which opens Sept. 21 in a big way: hosting rival Montana State.
Â
"Playing MSU straight out of the gate adds some intensity to preseason and even the first weekend," Lawrence said. "Your focus isn't there yet, but you know it's right in front of you, so I'm excited for how the schedule worked out, and to see us hopefully get after it from the very start."
Â
The Grizzlies also have home matches against Idaho State (Sept. 30), Spring 2021 champion Weber State (Oct. 2), Portland State (Oct. 14), Sacramento State (Oct. 16) Northern Colorado (Oct. 30), Eastern Washington (Nov. 4) and Idaho (Nov. 6).
Â
Montana will face six of those teams on the road, including Montana State in Bozeman on Tuesday, Oct. 26, in addition to traveling to Southern Utah (Oct. 21) and Northern Arizona (Oct. 23) for the only meetings of the season.
Â
Following a 16-match conference slate, the Big Sky Conference tournament will be held Nov. 18-20 – the week before Thanksgiving this year – at a to-be-determined location.
Â
"There were some things that were cool, and challenged and grew us," Lawrence said about the altered spring schedule, "but knowing that we're going to get every team at the beginning of the season, and again in the second half, I think we'll be able to track our growth a lot better. From a conference perspective, I think it makes things more equitable throughout the nine weeks."
Â
Aside from former Big Sky opponent North Dakota, Montana's non-conference slate will be relatively new. Montana has never before played Cal Baptist, College of Charleston or Kennesaw State, and has played the other seven opponents three times or fewer in its history.
Â
Kennesaw State – Montana's season opener – will be the highlight of the Grizzlies' opening weekend. The Owls have won more than 75 percent of their matches over the past five seasons, twice advancing to the NCAA tournament, including in 2019, the most-recent complete season.
Â
Wichita State has become a powerhouse in the American Athletic Conference. Under head coach Chris Lamb, the Shockers advanced to the NCAA tournament in 10 of 11 seasons from 2007-17, winning a handful of matches in the NCAA tournament along the way. Also during the second weekend, Montana will face a Cal Baptist team that was in a postseason tournament as recently as 2018.
Â
During the third weekend, Montana will face a Drake team that posted a winning record a season ago and was in a postseason tournament in 2018, as well. North Dakota won the Big Sky and played in the NCAA tournament in 2017, its final season in the league.
Â
Additionally, Green Bay won the Horizon League in 2018 and advanced to the NCAA tournament that year, while CSU Bakersfield was in the postseason the following year after winning the WAC.
Â
While the schedule features some strong competition – including opponents who have recent postseason experience and will push the Grizzlies – Lawrence was also intentional about trying to find teams that are going through similar transitions as Montana is.
Â
"We wanted to change things up and get out of our region a little bit," Lawrence said of crafting the non-conference slate. "Trying to do that, we focused on some teams that would push us and make us better come conference play, but also tried to find some teams who are in similar spots as us, getting better each year but still in major growth periods.
Â
"My hope is that through the first four weeks of competition, we can create some scenarios where, if we are hyperaggressive going into those tournaments, we can gain some confidence from those matches."
Â
Montana, which has primarily relied on freshmen and sophomores the past two seasons, is starting to develop experience. Missoula product Sarina Moreno is back for her senior season starting at libero, while the Grizzlies return a pair of pin hitters who have two years of experience under their belts. Montana also returns its starting middle blocker, setter and a handful of reserves. Still, just three of the 17 players on roster have gone through a traditional calendar year (fall season, spring workouts), due to the 2020 spring being wiped away and the 2020 fall being pushed to the spring.
Â
In addition to Montana's returners, the Griz welcomed three transfers and three freshmen who will compete for playing time. Montana will report for fall training camp in early August.
