FARMINGTON, Utah – Volleyball season is still several months away, but on Thursday the Big Sky Conference announced its 2022 league volleyball schedule.
The slate will still feature 16 Big Sky dates, with teams playing most teams twice, once at home and once on the road. The exceptions for Montana will be Eastern Washington (only on the road) and Northern Colorado (only at home).
Montana's Big Sky season will begin with a rare split weekend, with the Grizzlies traveling to Northern Arizona (Sept. 22) before coming home to host Idaho (Sept. 24). The match against the Vandals will cap a busy weekend on campus, with volleyball playing after Griz football's homecoming game vs. Portland State.
The Grizzlies will play their next three matches on the road, including an Oct. 1 contest at Montana State. The Grizzlies have won the past two meetings in Bozeman, including a thrilling, five-set victory this past October to claim the Main Line Trophy.
After a road-heavy start to league play, Montana will spend the next two weeks in Missoula, hosting Northern Arizona (Oct. 13), 2021 tournament champion Northern Colorado (Oct. 15), 2021 regular-season champion Weber State (Oct. 20) and Idaho State (Oct. 22).
The Grizzlies will then play at regional rivals Eastern Washington (Oct. 27) and Idaho (Oct. 29), before returning home for three more home dates, beginning with Portland State (Nov. 3) and Sacramento State (Nov. 5) and wrapping up with Montana State in the team's home finale (Nov. 12). After the past several seasons have seen the Griz-Cat rivalry match be played on Tuesday nights, this year, the contests will take place on the weekend as both teams' only match of the week.
Montana will conclude the regular season at Idaho State (Nov. 17) and Weber State (Nov. 19), before hopefully another trip to the Big Sky Conference tournament, which will take place the following week, once again in Ogden, Utah.
Prior to its Big Sky slate, Montana will play four weekends of non-conference action, beginning Aug. 26. Details regarding the team's preseason weekends are still being formalized and will be made available in the coming months.
The Grizzlies won 11 matches in 2021 – their most since 2013 and more than the past two seasons combined – and qualified for the Big Sky Conference tournament for the third time in four seasons. They bring back five of their seven starters from this fall, including all-conference outside hitter Paige Clark.
