BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Grizzlies traveled back to Bozeman on Saturday for the 45th annual MSU Cross Country Classic. Montana's women placed fourth out of 10 teams, while the men were fourth out of nine teams. The Grizzlies finished behind Big Sky opponents Montana State, Weber State and Idaho State and ahead of the NAIA schools competing from the Treasure State.
Facing stiff competition, including several regionally ranked teams, the Grizzlies had two of the top-20 female runners, with senior Beatrix Frissell placing 15th out of 83 competitors (17:59.40) and Colorado transfer Annie Hill finishing 20th (18:07.80) in her Griz debut.
Freshman Iris McKean had an impressive first 5k run, placing 29th (18:38.20), while a pair of Grizzlies ran personal bests by more than 34 seconds. Junior Jaylyn Hallgrimson placed 40th (19:07.70) and sophomore Abby Sherwood finished 61st (20:07.90).
Montana's other runners were Bridget Boyle (19:06.10, 38th) and Kayla Ingraham (19:14.50, 41st).
Of the 86 men's finishers, three of Montana's runners finished in the upper-half, paced by junior Nathan Carter (25:52.00, 19th) and senior Rogelio Mares (25:56.70, 21st).
For Mares, a graduate student from Yakima, Washington, it was an 8k PR by more than 22 seconds.
Senior Will Dauenhauer ran a time of 26:40.10, to finish 35th, while sophomore Brady Woods (27:09.70, 46th) and freshmen Cooper Morris (27:25.70, 50th) and Colin Shaules (27:41.70, 56th) all ran the 8k distance for the first time in their collegiate careers.
The Grizzlies will next compete at home, hosting the Montana Open on Sept. 29.
