The Montana volleyball team has established a culture under head coach Allison Lawrence that has led not only to success on the floor, but also in the classroom. The Grizzlies have won 28 games in the previous two seasons, the best two-year stretch since 2008-09, and have also been honored for their academics for the fourth straight year.
Â
Montana received the ACVA Team Academic Award sponsored by INTENT for the fourth straight season. In order to be eligible for the award, the team is required to maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.
Â
"It's a huge achievement," head coach Allison Lawrence said. "The main reason we are here is for athletes to get degrees and part of that process is to find your passion academically and commit to working your hardest in the classroom."
Â
It's the ninth time overall that Montana has won the award after not having won it since 2014.
Â
The Grizzlies had a cumulative team GPA of 3.60 on the season. They shined in the spring with a team GPA of 3.70 and three different players with individual 4.0 GPAs. Alexis Batezel, Ellie Scherffius, and Catie Semadeni each finished with perfect GPAs.
Â
There were nine other individuals with GPAs higher than 3.60 in the spring as the team dominated in the classroom.
Â
"The fact that they are able to do it semester after semester while competing as hard as they can on the court goes to show how much integrity they have in every area of their lives," Lawrence said. "I couldn't be more proud."
