The University of Montana men's basketball team fell on the road to No. 11 Louisville on Saturday morning. The Grizzlies hung tough with the nationally ranked Cardinals early, but a 17-0 run at the end of the first half created the separation they needed the rest of the way.
Â
The Cardinals improved to 10-2 on the year with the 94-54 win while Montana dropped to 6-7 to close out non-conference play.
Â
Montana never led in the game, but a run late in the first half brought them within five at 25-20 as they were slowing down the high-powered Louisville offense. Over the final 4:25 of the half, Louisville scored 17 unanswered to break the game open.
Â
The Grizzly offense struggled from the floor, shooting 32 percent while committing 19 turnovers on the offensive end. Louisville entered the game 14th in the country in scoring at over 91 points per game with over 12 made threes per contest.
Â
Grant Kepley entered the game with 10 total points on the season but had a great performance off the bench, scoring a new season high 15 points. He led the Grizzlies on the day, shooting 5-of-12 from the floor.
Â
The Grizzlies also had Tyler Thompson return from his one-game absence. He missed the Montana Tech game with an illness but contributed 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting from three-point range.
Â
There were nine different scorers for the Grizzlies. Money Williams led Montana with five rebounds and three assists.
Â
Louisville had five players score in double figures led by 6-11 forward Sananda Fru with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting. The size was a problem for the Grizzlies as they were outrebounded 48-25 in the game. Louisville also had a 44-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Â
This was the third game against a ranked opponent in the last two seasons for Montana. They fell to 0-12 against ranked teams under Coach DeCuire and 1-7 all-time against opponents from the ACC.
Â
Montana will have 12 days off before returning home to open Big Sky Conference play. The Grizzlies play at Northern Arizona on Jan. 1 and then host Northern Colorado on Jan. 3.
